kind of darkly funny that "gender studies" is the stereotypical "useless degree" because gender studies will help you understand a large and important chunk of the current psychosis in american life

Over at @liberalcurrents.com you can find so many wonderful essays, but you can also find #HalfTheAnswer with @caitlinmoriah.bsky.social and I. We asked so many questions in 2025, and had so many excellent and informative guests on the program; who, you might ask? Well, we’re glad you asked. 🧵

Attacks on feminism are similar to attacks on vaccines. We begin to take for granted a world where women have rights and most children live to see adulthood, and then, over time, we begin to forget, neglect, and (now) reject the movements and innovations that brought us here.
Until the mid-1970’s, a man could not be convicted of rape in New York State based solely on the testimony of the woman he raped. A second witness was required because the female rape victim was deemed unreliable.

Feminism has not failed women.

“it’s reasonable to ask questions about trans girls in sports” was always intended to mainstream transphobia.

It’s absurd that people fell for it. Democrats are constantly letting oppressors set the terms of debate instead of just saying “no, fuck you.”

They want to make child torture the law. The biggest trauma in many trans lives, even alongside the myriad horrors cis people can also experience, is the lost childhood and physical scars of an adolescence in which they were forced to pretend to be a completely different person than they really are.

Those purported liberals should've seen through this bullshit the minute the Right claimed to care about "protecting girls." But plenty of those purported liberals are perfectly comfortable with the kind of soft sexism this logic implies.
They developed the "high school girl's sports" angle as a wedge issue, to lever their way up to full society-wide discrimination. What's endlessly stunning to me is how many purported liberals a) helped them when it started & b) are still helping them even after the larger purpose has become clear!

when people claim their chatbot girlfriends are real, they are telling on themselves about what they think women are or should be
If we are banning cell phones for kids we need to be talking about banning chatbots for boomers

I hate making non-cat posts. I hate "discourse". But the number of comments I've seen degrading and dehumanizing sex workers because of that Melania trailer is appalling. That ghoulish woman will never see your "whore" jokes but they absolutely contribute to the stigma that gets sex workers killed.

we're not going to talk about how this current usage of 'slop' got popularized from 4chan's 'goyslop' I guess
Merriam-Webster’s human editors have chosen ‘slop’ as the 2025 Word of the Year.

Do not go and harass the OP.

But there will 100% be more posts like the one the not OP (the person I’m quoting) is commenting on. Bc one of the functions of antisemitic hate speech is to manipulate/consolidate the speech of folks’ ingroup and you can do that easily on social media.

Though tbh it really should not be surprising that a white dude who systematically pushed questions of power out of what counts as “real” linguistics is fine having no analysis of power in his friends circles either

Today, I examine how the boundaries of the Nation are co-constituted by race, disability, and sexuality, but also---notably---gender and control over reproduction.

And ask everyone to stop saying transfeminism is 'imperialist'. For fuck's sake.

Those who perceived a discussion as toxic/polarized tend to remain silent: But toxicity engages power users (namely men interested in politics) www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

The only way this makes sense is when you understand health as a product sold to individuals.

Once you turn health into a product and healthcare into a business, then you can blame individuals for not being able to afford their health(care) rather than look at the environment in which they live.
Roger Marshall: "We want patients to become consumers again. We want patients to see what the actual prices are. We believe that if we would add the price tags to this bill, that it would save the country a trillion dollars a year."

"incel" only holds weight if you agree that the value of a person is related to their sexual activity. calling Fuentes an incel does nothing to lower his standing among his peers but it does affirm and recirculate misogynistic logic. make of that what you will.
27-year-old white nationalist and professional misogynist Nick Fuentes admitted to Piers Morgan that he has never slept with a woman, effectively crowning himself the incel king of the far-right.

for the love of God - I really wish the elite liberal litigation establishment (if there is such a thing) - would give up the fantasy that using Republican legal doctrine will somehow convince this MAGA #SCOTUS to rule for then. It's the same fantasy of bipartisanship w see from Cong Dem leaders.
the attempt by the attorney representing Rebecca Slaughter to use Trump v. United States for good is going sideways hard and it is making me even more confident in my opinion that there's no real upside to using Republican legal doctrine

it won't convince Republican judges

it's not meant for us

This is horrific and exactly what those of us in Black studies, gender studies, women’s studies have been warning our colleagues in the sciences about. Their seeming neutrality will not save them.
Heartbreaking. The University of Nebraska will terminate its entire Earth science department.

One of the country's most successful and respected geology & climate programs: gone.

When ideologues & politicians are threatened by the very act of studying climate change, I wonder: who of us is next?
It's over.

Despite the fact that the academic council recommended against it, despite the fact that the program brought in more tuition than it cost, and despite the fact that Nebraskans need & deserve this expertise, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences will be cut.
