Thing is we’ve built a very large zone of exception around “crime” and as long as people claim they are taking action to fight “crime” they’re going to receive deference.

Hi. Please support my favorite independent news outlet in Chicago. Unraveled's recent work revealed:

-DHS agent Timothy Donahue's racist X account.
-DHS agents lied about killing Silverio Villegas Gonzalez
-IL Dems caved to RW law and order rhetoric and built a surveillance state using ALPRs
~1 yr ago we sent a Giving Tuesday email to our tiny mailing list shortly after starting our own publication.

In the time since, we have been overwhelmed by how many of you find our work worth supporting.

No email this time around. But if you'd like to support indie media today, here's how:

Johnson tries to reframe the debate over the budget after suffering a very public defeat at the hands of the Finance Committee:

Ladies and gentlemen, the progressive mayor: COPS OVER LIBRARIES.
Johnson vows to veto any budget that includes a property tax increase or makes cuts to the proposed $2.1 billion for the Chicago Police Department.

CONTEXT: No one has seriously proposed either.

Just horrific. These are crimes.

And let’s be clear — this is by design. They’ve been forthright about that. The aim is to make it migrants suffer so much that they give up their due process rights and leave voluntarily.
A family friend was telling us about what her husband shared about his experience in Broadview before he was deported back to Mexico. She's been sharing to friends and family because she's just in disbelief & horror what her husband told her. She wasn't able to talk to him until he was in Mexico.

i know this is rhetorical but the answer is to get intimate control over the lives of people who are literally required to be vulnerable around you
If you work in healthcare and aren’t constantly appalled by the suffering people endure over something as stupid and unnecessary as people going without food or proper nutrition (or housing or medicine etc) in the wealthiest country in the history of the world then why are you working in healthcare?
The nurse who made fun of new parents who can’t feed their babies without SNAP was fired.

Shame on her.

Poverty is not a moral failing.

Those in healthcare roles are supposed to help, not hurt.

Don’t forget to donate diapers, formula & feminine care products to food banks!

Thinking about this again today as I read through the right-wing crash-outs and notice how many center on a fear of what others will do— not necessarily to them, just in general.
One thing I'm realizing about conservative psychology is that these folks are verrrrry focused on other people's behavior. Which is one of the top things your therapist will tell you to stop doing if you don't want to be anxious and depressed. No wonder so many of them are so miserable.

I'll close with a reminder I give every year: unlike our other billion-dollar-plus departments, CPD is almost entirely paid for with the general-purpose corporate fund.

Out of every dollar spent on the police budget, roughly 94 cents could be spent on any other city department, if Council wanted.

The correct unit of municipal budget analysis is not dollars but "Cost of Policing (CoP) days/hours"

You take total money spent on cops over the year (including OT and settlements) and divide by 365 to get one CoP day
New from me: The police are defunding our cities. In LA, LAPD’s growing liability lawsuits are costing taxpayers millions of dollars in payouts. $400m in payouts since 2019. The biggest culprits: protests, police shootings, and car collisions. More👇
