I propose to make universal the old policy of the Blackfriars conference at the American Shakespeare Center:

If you do not end your paper on time, you will be forced to exit, pursued by a bear. Literally, a bear will come take your paper from you.

Reading American history will break your heart a thousand times but it will also fill you with such admiration and awe for all the people who were excluded from the protection of America’s founding principles and fought to promote, protect and expand them anyways

The snake eating its own tail effect of AI agents isn’t so much a problem of training data model collapse as the collapse of the social epistemic foundations by which human sense-making can be carried out at all—and which AI agents *also* rely on for whatever facsimile of sense-making they conduct.

a lot of ppl in the USA would’ve said this exact thing less than a decade ago, and a lot of ppl who live in countries with large far-right political movements rapidly gaining ground (often helped by the same tech billionaire players as here) seem too busy looking askance at the States to notice
It's great to live in a country (Canada, Japan, UK, France, Germany, Sweden, Italy, etc.) where citizens don't worry about if the next election will be canceled, if they will be allowed to register to vote, if they will have to stand in line for hours to vote, or if their vote will be counted.

While MLPS was a victory, moral and tangibly, for ICE resisters, don't call it 'a retreat.' The dystopia is just getting started

Thousands of new agents. 150 new offices in every state. And the nationwide gulag archipelago. The fight has just begun

No, ICE isn’t ‘retreating.’ It’s loading up to invade your town. | Will Bunch
A much-hyped ICE pullback from Minneapolis is a blip in a looming nationwide surge of arrests, concentration camps.

I’ve seen the critique that making these hats isn’t “doing anything” but I’d say raising 3/4s of a million for their local food shelf and rent assistance org seems like doing a lot.
There were only three left in the basket at Needle & Skein until the knitters fill it up again, but I snagged one! The total raised is now over $750,000.

I have been beating myself up for rewatching shows instead of keeping up shows currently airing (talking about Thai/Japanese BL fwiw) and I was worrying that it's an attention thing.

But actually I think it might be that every day is so hard right now. I need comfort and familiarity, not novelty.

I have three hearings at three different courthouses today. At the second, someone was sobbing outside the courtroom. They'd asked ChatGPT what to say in Court. They believed what it told them.

They lost because it hallucinated, and they didn't know there were no do-overs.

And as Robby keeps pointing out, everyone is behind in their paperwork. GenAI is an attempt to patch over a problem that exists because of structural issues (not enough staffing) but ends up creating new problems. It doesn't solve anything. It's a cost-saver for CEOs.

So I read the reddit post, and a lot of folks are commenting that this might be a fake post. And it certainly could be! But one of the reasons coming up a lot is that management and middle management wouldn't do this.

And folks, if you believe that, you're hallucinating more than AI.
