ICE “left” Chicago in November, but they’ve disappeared three people from my community in two days this week.

Don’t believe the hype about them, leaving Minnesota, either.

You're a man. I mean to say, it's possible you're being treated differently than women expressing opinions about AI. (This is simply a guess! I could easily be wrong!)

Plenty of people questioning whether the Minnesota withdrawal is legitimate which is completely fair; my point is bigger picture- in the sense that it is signaling retreat even if they don’t intend to fully follow through on it. But the point about skepticism is well taken, and well put thusly:

As someone who is on the precipice of needing sinus surgery, I'm considering asking EVERYONE I come into contact with about it from here on out about AI usage in surgery. No thank you! I'd rather have a sinus infection forever than have AI surgery!

Thing is, knowing where a medical instrument is in a patient's body didn't need AI. This has been done for a long time. Stereotactic surgery used a wire frame mounted to a skull during a CT/MRI. The frame was left so during surgery, the doctor could compare the imaging with their instruments...

"A 2025 Siena poll found that forty-eight percent of all [American] men aged 18-49 have an active online sports betting account" is one of those stats that reminds me my social circles are not normal. I think I could name one or two people I regularly talk to who *might* do sports betting?
I see no reason not to look at the online gambling and prediction market craze as a new opioids crisis.

It will wreak havoc on lower-income Americans and leave a trail of destruction and despair in its wake.

The companies are just Purdue Pharma 2.0

Tech people have a pattern where they stumble up to basically any area of human endeavor and underestimate / misunderstand what is being done so wildly that they immediately start yapping about how whatever new shiny they are trying to sell can totally replace the whole discipline or industry.

This is not to say that the digital revolution (which is also the big data revolution, which has morphed into the AI revolution) is not bringing some killer new tools that actually help a lot … but this arrogance where the instinct is to -replace- rather than -understand- and -help- is … meh.

Like OP said, the fun is in the journey. How does the fiction aithor get to their destination? What does the destination say about the world and the characters? The point of reading is the act of reading, not whatwvwe happens on the final few pages.

Once again: people are angry for very good reason, and this brand of post is perhaps one of the most tedious and bewildering. Practically every social media platform is rabidly pro-‘AI’ so are govts, academia, companies. This one small space being critical of AI is okay, I think.

So I'm delighted that for the next 2 days sales of the audiobook of Lessons in Magic and Disaster via @libro.fm will benefit BINC, which helps booksellers in need 🥰

IDC. I don't want it, I won't use it, and you can't make me be happy about it. My grandparents lived their lives without computers, vcrs, or any music device newer than an 8 track. Not cuz they thought these were bad but because THEY, PERSONALLY, didn't want it.

Because folks don't actually want to discuss AI, they want blind submission to the ideological structures that motivate the contemporary use cases and deployments of AI. They don't want to hear the concerns except to dismiss them out of hand.
