Having done one of the largest studies out there on fine-free policies, I can say with great confidence that while removing fines does slightly push back average return times, it's not enough to affect overall circ stats and still has items being returned on average well before their due dates.
goodnight, and remember: library late fees suck. they simply discourage library use. you should be glad if your library abolished them, and if it hasn’t, you should tell them it should. 📚

Goodnight, friends.

Be kind to yourselves. Rest. It's ok not to be ok.

We've got a lot of work ahead.

I love you.

It is a weird scarcity mindset combined with religion combined with *bigotry

People who assume most folks won't library books without the risk of punishment scare me.

And it isn't because of library policy. It's because their worldview about people is dangerous.

Also, the number of these people who think late book returners are some sort of malicious evil mastermind people trying to screw other is also INSANE.
The number of folx who are pro-late fees is INSANE.

There are a bunch of people in Tony's mentions saying that abolishing late fees hurts library usage, and I'd like to show them the data from my library, where usage has been steadily increasing in the 6 years since late fees were eliminated.

Revlimid has its origin in a pill that cost patients $7.50 each.

Decades later, the cancer drug costs more than $18,000 for a month’s supply — even though it still only costs about 25 cents to manufacture.

Our #8 most-read story of 2025:
The Price of Remission: This Cancer Drug Saves Lives — but Costs a Fortune. I Wanted to Know Why.
When I was diagnosed with cancer, I set out to understand why a single pill of Revlimid cost the same as a new iPhone. I’ve covered high drug prices as a reporter for years. What I discovered shocked ...

Sure it is. It's arbitrary, created in a general sense so the library can make sure it gets books back and can lend them to other patrons. But if you keep a book out a few extra days, there's not really a "cost" to the library, so the library should not get to manufacture revenue from it.

Library fines are regressive taxes. All libraries should eliminate them. More books will be returned if they do.

I’m reminded this year of Audre Lorde: “These places of possibility within ourselves are dark because they are ancient and hidden; they have survived and grown strong through darkness.”

I am struggling with what might be a generational experience. The gulf war was pretty politically formative for me. It’s not history so much as memory this time.

It is destabilizing to see almost the exact same gameplan but this time without the guardrails that at the time I took for granted.
