Pedestrian birder in Chicago. Click on #birds tag to see just my bird photos without the whinging. I'm also sharing bird links using the #BirdLinks tag. I'm embarrassed by my typos but usually not enough to delete them. Gear: OM1 & OM 150-400 & 100-400
Saw a weird moment of informal "wealth redistribution". This beater of a car was parked for a delivery blocking the driveway of a $30 million mansion in Lincoln Park, Chicago. A poor man stealing some of a rich man's time. Needless to say the rich man subjected his entire 'hood to non-stop car horn.

Saw a delivery telepresence robot glitching out on North Sheridan Road in Chicago today. Glad it didn't hurt anyone.

Missing in the conservation about Grok generating CSAM is the question of how it learned to do this. Was it trained with CSAM material? This seems like a big question that is going unasked and unanswered.

We are a few weeks out from Trump/Miller talking about a Canadian Terrorist Organization. You wouldn't know her.

The windows driver software for Logi is trying to sell me a mac mouse for some reason. Everything is getting so dumb.

I just stumbled upon featherbase, a database of feather pictures from a bunch of bird species.🪶

So pretty!

AI internet spam pollution is going to destroy hobby interest groups on Facebook. It's already pretty annoying & it's only going to worsen unless platforms work to prevent it rather than actively encouraging & rewarding it. Facebook letting this run amok will kill my primary use case for Facebook.

My Discover Feed is full of two week out NFL posts for some weird reason. I've already seen them and they are all out date. Some BlueSky wackiness going on here.

I would like to be able to buy some nice middle class stuff from Amazon like nice decorative pillows and such but when you order some it is just incredibly cheap garbage with weird colors and the worst imaginable fabrics.

I need department stores to come back.

THIS. Did you know sickle cell is curable, now? FULLY curable.

If you're feeling down or despairing about what FEELS like technology/advancement/science "standing still" or being fully malicious, I have great news: You're not paying attention to actual science. Just tech industry marketing.
meanwhile.... medicine has taken INSANE leaps and bounds in the last 2 years.
we're out here curing HIV and leukemia and creating 100% efficacy vaccines against all sorts of cancers, and now this??

between this and renewable energy outstripping fossil fuels in efficiency, the future is bright
Wanna see real-life miracles? Fund scientific research.

A team of US scientists just cured Alzheimer’s in mice — and there is now hope that the disease can be reversed in humans.

The whole thing about fascists is that the capitalists admire their total disregard of rules, laws, norms and procedures, they see that the fascists run a state the way they run a business, as dictators, but the capitalists aligned with this regime were already the richest ppl in history

Absolutely wild given that the Keyes Constant, the number of people in the US who are batshit crazy in every poll or election, is something like 27%
One of the most lopsided results you'll ever see in a poll, from our weekend Washington Post poll www.washingtonpost.com/politics/int...

They kidnapped the head of a Latin American country, replaced him with an insecure white racist who has spent his entire life arguing that Latinos are subhuman, and made clear that their primary aim is to plunder the country for its resources.

If it isn't yet clear, yes, we're the fucking baddies.
Per WASH POST, Stephen Miller will play an “elevated role” in Venezuela (what could go wrong!) and Machado won’t be president because she accepted the Nobel Peace Prize Trump wants (yes, seriously)

Couldn’t make it up if we tried

A number of studies show that various vaccines (shingles, RSV, flu) are associated with “off-target” benefits like reduced cardiovascular risk, lower rates of dementia, and lower Alzheimer’s risk for older people. [nytimes.com]
Vaccines Are Helping Older People More Than We Knew
Many shots seem to have “off-target” benefits, such as lowering the risk of dementia, studies have found.
