50 years ago today, this photo of the Chicago press conference for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest was taken.

In the background you can see Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert — in the clothes they wore in the Siskel & Ebert pilot, which was also shot that same day.

SOME local news outlets would look upon the end of the NYC mayoral as a chance to kick back and recuperate.

BUT NOT @hellgatenyc.com !!!

Because secretly this whole time we've been working on a MASSIVE UPDATE TO THE TABLE OF SUCCESS.

Welcome to THE LAST SUPPER.

not to beat a dead horse but they do this not out of some belief about maximizing electoral returns but out of an aversion to rhetorically committing themselves to doing something about epstein/corruption/ICE/whatever other issue they’re avoiding, should they win power back
The usual suspects are telling Dems that Epstein won’t win elections, get back to “affordability” and I think my head might explode. www.offmessage.net/p/force-a-re...
Force A Referendum On The Epstein Coverup
It divides Republicans much more than "affordability" or any other economic issue.

Nothing Talia says supports this guy's interpretation. "Luxury" housing that's shoddily constructed is a known issue. Rich people buying/renting apartments they don't live in is a known issue.

You have to ignore the pro-new-housing first half of the post to get mad at her about it.

Pretty much all affordability discourse could benefit from just posting this chart.

If you're in the better off America, all the luxury goods you want in excess are for the most part much cheaper. If you're in the poorer America, most of the shit you need to live/grow is more expensive.

i don’t play pundit and try to guess how stuff will play to voters whose politics generally make no sense to me, but if ending the shutdown was about the important business of getting SNAP benefits and air travel back online, it also rewards hostage taking in a way that seems pretty ominous to me

Important to understand this. There's a reasonable chance that your Dem Senator who voted against it and is acting mad now was in on the play. It's the same reason why they scheduled the surrender for AFTER the election this week. They didn't want people pissed at Dems right before an election.
The caucus meeting was just to orchestrate who would fall on the sword but not be up for a vote in 2026.
so currently defectors are:

Kaine (2030)
Shaheen (Retiring)
Hasan (2028)
Fetterman (2028)
Durbin (Retiring)
CCM (2028)
Rosen (2030)
King (2030)

Dems backed Trump into a corner where he’s advocating for starving Americans and hemorrhaging support. If they vote to let him off the hook in exchange for nothing it’s a cataclysmic failure. I know people are in pain but insulating Republicans from political consequences is not the answer.

Sooooo, he's not actually opposed to it. He helped pick senators who are safe or retiring to vote yes. That way he and the others can put on a little show of opposition.
Schumer: "I must vote no. I can not, in good faith, support this CR. ... Make no mistake about it, the American people know who is inflicting this pain on them."

He stops short of urging his colleagues to vote "no."

If the Dems will cave on this there is no right of yours that they will not throw away if it means they can go on vacation.

I hate them with my whole heart.

Brad Lander just going pure sicko mode after he cross endorsed Mamdani is the funniest sub-plot of this entire campaign

Moreover, ICE must be destroyed

This to me is the game. I don’t care if Schumer doesn’t like Mamdani, but for him to stand silently by while sex pest Cuomo leans into gutter racism and Islamophobia while accepting endorsements from Trump, Musk and Miller is outrageous from the Senate Minority Leader.
Schumer had a chance to repudiate the gutter racism and Islamophobia of Cuomo's campaign and he just fucking didn't. And that is disqualifying. He should be ashamed and we the voters should make sure he feels that shame.
Reporter: Today is election day in New York City. Did you vote for Mamdani or Cuomo?

Schumer: Look, I voted. And I look forward to working with the next mayor to help New York City.

I had thought most of my naive idealism had been stomped out of me by now, but it’s amazing to me that this level of public animosity could be directed by Democratic leadership toward a sweet and personable young candidate of their own party seemingly exclusively because of his background.

Boy Mamdani's race is really a vivid reminder that anti-Islamic bigotry is 100% accepted in US public discourse. People don't even bother dog whistling, it's just right out in the open.
