senior writer at Texas Monthly. wrote the YA novel The Fight For Midnight (it’s about abortion bans). i’m really a very complicated kinda guy. he/him
this is a really incredible thing to fully consider
It’s pretty wild that the most rabidly anti-immigrant administration in recent memory is comprised of a President married to an immigrant, a VP married to the daughter of immigrants, an assistant AG in charge of Civil Rights who’s an immigrant (Dhillon), & it was all funded by an immigrant (Musk).

shout out to parents who are like “of course you can wear your astronaut costume on the airplane” to their four year old

feels like at some point if there are still books being written, the one about how all of these supposedly very savvy business leaders simply said “you’ve got a bag of magic beans? take my cow, please” when it was offered to them will be a particularly humiliating one
The exec that said "we thought it was farther along then it was" is absolutely the greatest issue right now. Not only is it not capable of doing any of these things on a broad scale, it will do them significantly worse than any employee. Going all in on something to boost stock value that fails.
Honestly im shocked

Well

Not that shocked

“jeffrey epstein spent the last days before he killed himself trying to assemble the avengers of famous convicted pedophiles to complain about how unfair it is that they’re in jail and donald trump is president” is not a sentence that should make sense, if you’re confused you’re doing it right

i always feel vaguely gaslit when the gate agent at the airport begging people to gate-check their bags describe it as a “free service” they are offering and not something they desperately need people to do in order for the plane to take off on time. they should offer a reward!!!!

“sorry, white men are at a real disadvantage these days” is also a thing literary and hollywood agents tell their white male clients to make them feel better about their book/script not selling or then not getting a job during staffing season, and to deflect blame from themselves for the failure
longstanding theory on this is that people who know the applicant that they don't want to hire has racial resentment offer "wish i could've hired you, but they made me hire a black woman instead!" as a let-them-down-easy cope rather than admit to them that they just didn't want to hire them.

imagine thinking people liked car insurance companies and wanted them to involved in a much bigger aspect of their lives
Scalise: "Everybody complains, 'Why when I watch TV do I see this Gecko lizard & emu & all these animals out there selling car insurance & homeowners insurance? Why aren't they selling healthcare?' That's bc federal laws prohibit people to have choices for lower cost products for health insurance"

main question i have about the “progressives need to get on twitter to argue with right wingers otherwise they grow in power because they’re unchecked” is if those progressives think being argued with themselves undermines their ability to organize in the same way

lord of the rings: the two towers at midnight on opening night, 2002, at the regal westgate. i had just moved to austin and fucking WILLIE NELSON was in line with everyone else. my roommate introduced himself and said “this is gonna be a great movie, willie” and he said “yup, looking forward to it.”
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.
It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.

this is like if the urban myth that customer service workers are never allowed to end a phone call if you don’t end it first were real
An absolute horrific nightmare of two AI bots caught in a loop with each other is the perfect example of the total nothingness of AI “brains”.

good thread parsing how what’s presented as “wow these people are clueless” is actually “these people are trying to get you to react to their holocaust joke”
don’t watch this shit, the surprise is “we’re going to Auschwitz” inside the cake, but I’m quoting to make a point: Bytedance makes apps that are used for monetized ragebait, that’s their thing, the Chinese predecessor to TikTok was full of people eating live crabs and free climbing skyscrapers
I can’t emphasize enough how much you need to watch this until the end

The thing about the generational discourse is that if you do the research you can prove that the best generation lived from 399-429 CE.

Just a bunch of winners all around. Didn't judge each other, made great hummus, built a generation starship and left Earth. Great folks.

i get madder about it every time i read this dude pretend that going to the movies is some elitist coastal affectation only the privileged few get to enjoy when it’s one of the most widely accessible ways for pretty much anyone to have a fun night out
