even her filibuster didn’t have the force that a us senate talking filibuster would; it was only possible because the texas gop waited till the last day of the session to vote on the bill, which isn’t something that translates

the trump pressure on thune to kill the filibuster to end this unilaterally was the other way out i could see and imo it would have been a smarter play both in terms of the basic politics of not surrendering and also because dems would benefit in the future from abolishing the filibuster

i don’t know what the solution was, but it seems like we were gearing up for another week of trump demanding the gop abolish the filibuster, and that is pressure they’ve not shown the ability to resist for long. hard not to read this move as a choice in part to avoid that outcome as much as anything

i am receptive to the idea that those things are simply too important to not have with no way out, especially this time of year, but also demonstrating to people who will take them hostage that you’ll fall in line if they raise the stakes high enough isn’t tenable either
