With acts of nature, you can’t fight them. You see a hurricane coming, you have to get out of the way. Not so with social disasters like shit rulers.

Social disasters are different due to solidarity. When you're in a coalition with other folks, suddenly, you can fight the hurricane.

You can win.

they didn’t leak it to make the shooter look innocent, but to make the victim look guilty. not guilty of a crime. guilty of having a visibly queer wife. guilty of liberalism. guilty of opposing the regime. they don’t seek to exonerate themselves, only to demonstrate who deserves to die.
In the video that the shooter took, which I believe was leaked to be exculpatory, he appears to yell “fucking bitch” after he shoots Renee Good.

This bill to restrict the use of facial coverings by law enforcement officers is getting a public hearing on the very first day of Washington's legislative session, next Monday.

You can weigh in on it, without testifying, here:

Names aren't classified, publishing a government higher-up's name is not "doxxing," and journalists are entitled to publish news, even if it is classified, as long as they don't break the law to get it.

It's not the press's job to keep the government's secrets.

They hate them! It’s one of those things that sounds like a conspiracy but is absolutely true. It’s hard to process how much law enforcement can’t deal with reminders of their own violence.

The important part of this is not that AI can be good at craft—but that, as Hollis says, no amount of craft will make us feel a model has written a “great” poem.

AI keeps revealing that we care about human action, not about the abstractions (intelligence, creativity) we invented to describe it. +

Yes. It is a maddening aspect of human psychology. System justification theory attempts to explain this, and I think does a good job. (If you have a frustration with people, I have a paper. sorry. It's my toxic trait.)

This pairs up with some recent reads and offers a lot of food for thought. Consider the Metaverse through a lens presented by David Chalmers in Reality+: the one who builds and controls a simulation is a god of that simulation. The idea undermines the promise of human connection in virtual worlds.
far from disrupting power structures, in balance the advance of and spread of consumer tech over the last 30 years has on balance done more to make power easier to grow, concentrate, and defend

Let me explain:

We stayed over at Blackwood Forest over xmas.

When we arrived, I plugged the car into the electric charging point.

After it was charged I tried to release the charging cable.

I wrote section 230 to protect user speech, not a company's own speech. I've long said AI chatbot outputs are not protected by 230 and that it is not a close call. Given that the Trump administration is going to the mat to protect pedophiles, states should step in to hold Musk and X accountable.
I am not a Section 230 expert but being that Twitter is creating and publishing these photos I wonder if they actually have any civil legal protection? @kenwhite.bsky.social ? @akivamcohen.bsky.social ?
What X is allowing Grok to do is unlawful or regulatory-illegal in multiple jurisdictions, creates clear DSA violations, and continues despite regulator scrutiny. The images do not need to be pornographic, non-consensual sexualised or intimate depictions are enough.
