This is another consequence of the colonization of New Adult, esp of the romantasy variety, into YA. Publishers aren't just selling YA to adults, they're selling YA to adult women (usually cisallohet and white). That category doesn't want a book about 14yo boys playing basketball. My teen boys do.

Going through the spring 2026 young adult fiction releases, and from what I can tell so far, all of the books with male protagonists are romances. I don't see any sports books, male friendship, action/adventure, humor, mystery, or dystopian books (that don't share the stage with romance).

And how it's often seen as a norm in romantic relationships to put up with behaviors that are unacceptable in any other relationship dynamic. a big part for me of finally coming out as a trans guy and starting medical transition is just accepting that im gonna be a kinda goofy looking dude. im not gonna be an adonis! im not gonna look like wolverine! i'm gonna be 5'3 and stocky even if i work out like a fiend. but that's ok!

and on a personal level, we have to constantly CONSTANTLY police the part of ourselves that cares more about the comfy cozy status quo than we care about survivors who have been brave enough to speak up about what was done to them.
This doesn't apply to just NG; it doesn't just apply to entertainment or media industries. These quotes, from that 2024 post linked upthread, apply to the current situation & far too many others to count. Even if those files are fully released, we still gotta burn down the system that created them.

In LA County *23 percent* of the population is under 16. Kids are people! We must plan for their movement, just like all nondrivers. Hope that helps!
