"There's no ethical use case for AI in the classroom" has become my personal Carthago delenda est.

I even take time to explain to my students how we won't use it in class because it's dehumanizing. To their credit, they seem to get it.

Now with Andrea Bocelli and his kid?
The Netflix halftime show is the most random thing I’ve ever seen. So far, we’ve got Martha Stewart, Snoop, Tchaikovsky, and Huntr/x.

Update: as I was typing this, also some country lady?

Which is, to be clear, Jewish law’s requirements for how to treat the stranger.

Not because they might be a god in disguise, but because *that is the basic requirement for a fellow human being in need.”
This is "I know that Jesus is a magic demigod, and the important thing is to show God the respect that he deserves", but actually the story of the Nativity is, "I don't know who this stranger is, but I can see they need help, and I'm going to be compassionate whether he deserves it or not."

6YO who’s been on Christmas Overload since 5:45 AM *yesterday* has declared they’re going to have some quiet time. This is the best idea I’ve heard in days.
December 25, 2025 at 7:34 PM
It’s 7:39 am and we’ve done ALL of Christmas. Like, I’m picking up paper and organizing gifts into piles.

We wanted to put a livestream of the NORAD Santa Tracker on the TV and the Fox Nation one had a ticker at the bottom with all the requisite grossness.
Mt 11-year-old finished her free hotel breakfast in record time this morning and asked to go back to the room. I asked her why the rush, and she told me: "The breakfast room had F*x News on."
I was in a space that had F*x News on and I actually laughed out loud at how hard they’re pushing Dear Leader Trump God Emperor images and plot lines. It was so insane. 😬

there is one and only one political strategy, and that is: “hang trump like an anchor around the neck of every single elected republican and the party itself.” no ‘friends across the aisle.’ no ‘the fever will break.’ anyone not on board with that has to go. no exceptions

Every Christmas Eve, Iowa Public Radio plays the 3-hour production of "A Christmas Carol" with every voice done by former broadcaster Doug Brown. I love listening to it, especially when the ghost takes Scrooge to the mine under the moor & the lighthouse to remind us joy can be found everywhere.

Staggering indeed.

"I HAVE BEEN CANCELLED. THERE ARE NO ELITE OPPORTUNITIES FOR ME!" I loudly declared in the pages of The Atlantic with all the self-awareness of a lamppost.
it requires an absolutely staggering lack of self awareness for chatterton to complain that he has lost elite opportunities because he has anti-woke views.

So here's a novel thing, fellow academics:

I needed to find a paper discussing the Morrill Act's impact on Native Americans (spoiler: not great). So I looked up some papers. But then I did this weird thing that apparently not a lot of us are doing. I think it's called ACTUALLY READING THE SOURCES?

8YO: Dad, was Santa a thing in the 80s?

The time is 6:36 am. The NORAD Santa Tracker has now been running on my computer for 36 minutes. My 6YO has been looking forward to this day for WEEKS.

I love this channel because when it hits, it hits. Amy's a classical musician with basically no exposure to pop, rock, etc. Sometimes, she hears something transcendent, like NIN's "Hurt". Sometimes, it's great because she just. doesn't. know.

Like, "Why can't I see Pink Floyd's bass player?"

I am going to become the Joker.
So hear me out: what if we had like a coding academy that would make us into philosophers—but not the lame kind of philosophers that *think* things. We’d be the cool kind of philosophers that *do* things. Things like blockchain. And AGI. And human flourishing. Hey are people still doing NFT’s?

I would like to state for the record that while I teach in tech pants and t-shirts, (a) it serves the vital pedagogical function of reducing distance between me and my students and (b) I was assured by the sign at Costco that these are *dress* t-shirts.
This is why I don't date in the family. Also some philosophers are fashion challenged. Esp the APA crowd. #NotSorry

PHILOSOPHERS: Here’s a fun holiday diversion! What cuisines do you think are over or underrated?

THE SAME PHILOSOPHERS, 15 MINUTES LATER: Yes, but what is the *nature* of authenticity?

We are *tremendous* fun at parties.

A VERY IMPORTANT AND WONDERFUL PERSONAL UPDATE: Many of you know my younger brother was diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumors about a year and a half ago. He’s had significant treatment, including three major surgeries and monthly infusions, since then. Today, he got to ring the bell.
