I just updated my explainer for why I don't allow generative AI in my classrooms with a new section and an expanded section.

New: Generative AI has a literal body count

Expanded: Generative AI is dehumanizing

The ‘abolish ICE’ door is cracked open and every one of us needs to push and keep pushing.

“Liam’s father, Adrian Conejo Arias, said the family was in hiding. He cited a bomb threat at his son’s former elementary school and ICE agents patrolling the Columbia Heights home they no longer live in.”
‘He’s not the same’: Father of Liam Conejo Ramos says 5-year-old continues to suffer
Some people thought they say the 5-year-old during the Super Bowl halftime show. But Liam is still in hiding with his family, after he and his father were detained and then released from a Texas deten...

I was exposed to this song by one of my fraternity brothers, Akshat, who showed it to our entire house. We LOVED it and it became a kind of unofficial theme song. We danced to it at every party, and when we got married, we would dance to this at the reception while very confused guests looked on.
Everyone is posting non-English language bangers and yet I've yet to see anyone post one of the greatest things to ever happen to the internet, so I'm leaving it here. When was the last time you listened to this certified fucking banger?

As someone opposed to fascism generally and fascism in America specifically, here's one of the things I love about fascism qua aesthetic movement: If you can get people to realize they all look like a bunch of sad little dipshits, the spell breaks.

Like, <poof>. It's gone and they're just goobers.

Apparently, I live somewhere between “Tech and science journalists” and “Public figures and media.” My guess is this is because my most popular posts have been anti-AI?

I've seen some similar projects, but IMO this seems to better capture some of the fine-grained detail

My favorite ad so far is the OpenAI one that shits all over the idea of expertise and learning in favor of “you can just make stuff.”

Also, guess who’s thoroughly unbothered by the prospect of ads in their AI interactions because he’d have to *have* AI interactions first.

I'll admit that I sometimes struggle with they/them as a singular personal pronoun because it sounds infelicitous in my head. I'll also state unequivocally that this is a *me* problem that can be fixed with practice and reflection and *not* by imposing a police state on America.
Today on Volts: I'm joined by the great @michaelhobbes.bsky.social to discuss "reactionary centrism," an intellectual tendency that's come to dominate US public life. You know the type: would never view themselves as conservative, yet finds voluntary pronoun use vastly more aggravating than fascism.
All about "reactionary centrism"

Not even write. "Generate." Imagine saying this and thinking you're at the artistic vanguard.

"If I can throw a Lean Cuisine into the microwave, and you need 48 hours to brine your turkey before baking, who's going to win the race?"
“If I can generate a book in a day, and you need six months to write a book, who’s going to win the race?” God this is bleak

For most of American history, immigration screening was basically, "Are you Chinese?" If no, come on in. If yes, maybe.
The most common response I get as an Irish- American is "we did it legally" and then they have absolutely no interest in learning about historical trends in immigration. Ellis Island had a checkbox for stowaways and they think they're the product of some highly vetted process.

Reupping this because a colonoscopy is no big deal and anyone over 40 should be talking to their doctor about getting one.

Take care of yourselves, people.
The prep isn't nearly as bad as it used to be, the surgery is the best nap you'll ever have, and the first meal after is a religious experience.
Just got a colonoscopy this week! Unlike poor Saavik here, prep was basically painless for me. Drink the goop, poop a lot, done. Really the whole thing was smooth & easy & not worth the dread lots of folks bring to it.

If you're nearing or above 50, do it!

This, by the way, is exactly what Arendt meant by the banality of evil: a bunch of dipshits who think "hey, man, I don't make the rules" gives them license to be enormous shitbirds who ignore the most basic and obvious moral facts in the name of career advancement.
Gonzales on Liam Ramos and his family: "They're not gonna qualify for asylum. So what do you do with all the people that go through the process and do not qualify for asylum? You deport them. I understand that 5-year-old and it breaks my heart. I also think, what about that 5-year-old US citizen?"

Or philosophy.
There should be no American history book that makes it pass the censors either.
I do want to shout-out my fellow sociologists, who have collectively created a discipline so woke that not a single one of our introductory textbooks can make it past Florida's censors.

Great work everyone.
