WASHINGTON DC

A cold alert has been activated for today through tomorrow morning.

With consent, call the shelter hotline to have folks transported to an open shelter bed or warming center — 202-399-7093 or 311.

Give folks cash, hand warmers, blankets, sleeping bags, hats/scarves/gloves.

Hi everyone, with no eviction moratorium happening in Minnesota, mutual aid organizations like @supplydepotmpls.bsky.social could always use more donations (I mean they always could be, but the need is getting ever bigger): linktr.ee/sanctuarysup...

NEW: since last year, a pair of "highly trained" feds have been involved in an array of incidents attacking crowds with chemical weapons.

We used public records and open source analysis to identify Edgar Vazquez and Michael Sveum, alongside some other members of their tactical team.

Incredible reporting from Street Sense on the trend of escalating camp evictions, with the city routinely clearing the same people repeatedly. In 2025, one camp was cleared FOURTEEN TIMES.

Evictions don’t end homelessness.

These are our friends, our neighbors. We can continue to give these folks food and tents, but these are really only temporary measures to hold back the effects of state violence against the unhoused. These deaths are always avoidable and, arguably, intentional. May they rest in peace 🖤

Marissa also covered homelessness & encampment evictions in DC, something often overlooked by large media outlets.

A devastating loss. And completely avoidable.

May they rest in peace, they will be missed 🖤

3 yrs ago I started writing a book that is in stores TODAY. It's narrative nonfiction, anti-fascist spy thriller set in Trump era. It's timely as hell & I'm proud of it.

A thread of what people are saying abt it & why I hope you'll help make it a bestseller www.simonandschuster.com/books/To-Cat...

Happy 1st of the month, when we send $150, no questions asked, to 19 unhoused & recently housed folks.

Someone started a $150 monthly donation and said “add another.” So we did! Actually, we added two!

So today we are sending $150 to 19 people! Thank you all for making this happen!

No need to imagine. The country incarcerates children as young as 9 years old daily in youth prisons and jails. Those children are routinely sexually and physically assaulted and also emotionally tortured. They are fed terrible food and given barely any education. This country has done this for yrs.

Got a heads up that unhoused folks around Union Station have barely been getting any food since regular meal services are not running because of the snow.

So we made 30 turkey sandwiches & packed them up with fruit cups & chips. Folks were super grateful!

We’ll be back tomorrow with 30 more meals.

Giving money directly to people is the quickest and best way to support them & keep them safe.
January 30, 2026 at 3:22 AM
When things in the city are shutdown, many regular services (like meal distros) aren’t able to run & people aren’t able to panhandle as much money.

People outside are hungry right now. If you’re able make some extra hot food to bring out to folks. Give folks some cash so they can eat.

Something that sticks with me from this training: if you’re forming a group/organization, it’s important to spend time together outside of “the work”. Share meals together, grab coffee, etc.

You’re going to go through some shit together. This work is hard. Strong bonds help you navigate tough times

people are always like “what link do i give to?!”

one giant pile of money is actually not a great way to help people. people choosing a variety of places to give helps keep the money moving. no one org gets flooded to the point of breaking.

a PTA, the mutual aid venmo, can move $ even faster.

Masses of people are working together to organize mutual aid + community solidarity on a growing scale. A thread.
