Some flavour of neurodivergent. Some flavour of queer. Not normal about LotR, Leverage, Doctor Who, SPN. Cat person. She/her.
[Banner is a pretty sunset over grassland. Avi is selfie of a white woman with short, salt and pepper hair, and Doctor Who shirt.

Happy New Year, start it off smiling with this golden oldie
4 yrs ago today, a family member managed a truly spectacular own goal, splintered his domestic bliss, & in the process, united the world for a day.

On popular request, I shall now recreate the livetweet thread from that day

So gather around children, for this is the tale of The Rice Truck Saga

Neurotypicals have reportedly decided to celebrate the same thing happening in the same way again by standing outside in the cold and watching ten minutes of fireworks soundtracked by We are the Champions before heading back inside and moving on completely.
Neurotypicals mark arbitrary passage of time with more fucking fireworks

Going to try to grab a couple of hours sleep before the artillery barrage at midnight. Here's hoping for better things in 2026 (and for fascists to all fall in volcanoes).

Also, as we're doing year end, I realized I will not write something better for 2026 better than I wrote for 2024. (the newsletter's coming back, it just lay fallow because John underestimated the stress of "go from murder trial to showrunning to pilot" in 2024.)

While the rest of you return to your lives today (Tuesday), I return to jury duty. What an intriguing liminal space. So, there's a book about Adam Smith's...

[2] What fascinated me was the reaction from a guy, who would not have an issue with a trans person if he met them in real life. First his eyes opened wide & he got v angry. I was told I knew nothing about it & what was I BS’ing about! I explained I had 4 science degrees & might actually…

Over Christmas I explained to a friend that for the first 6 weeks of the foetus, all of us are female. Then hormonal changes take place & half become male. He looked unimpressed. So I said that both of us had had a sex change & should view trans ppl with empathy. This shook my buddy to the core [1]

No one looks nonbinary.

Androgynous, maybe, but those are not synonyms.

Nonbinary folks slant masc, femme, androgynous, or are fluid. You do not know looking at someone. Asking for preferred pronouns is a kindness this nonbinary femme appreciates. Thank you!

Right, my Honours List story. In the 1990s, a university friend's aunt received an OBE for services to charity. She met a man she described as "a very smartly dressed fellow with good manners but he really ought to shave that mustache."

It was Robert Mugabe.

Club MTV - Don’t Stop the Music (Rihanna)
MTV 90s - Goodbye (Spice Girls)
MTV 80s - Together in Electric Dreams (Oakey and Moroder)

THIS. Did you know sickle cell is curable, now? FULLY curable.

If you're feeling down or despairing about what FEELS like technology/advancement/science "standing still" or being fully malicious, I have great news: You're not paying attention to actual science. Just tech industry marketing.
meanwhile.... medicine has taken INSANE leaps and bounds in the last 2 years.
we're out here curing HIV and leukemia and creating 100% efficacy vaccines against all sorts of cancers, and now this??

between this and renewable energy outstripping fossil fuels in efficiency, the future is bright
Wanna see real-life miracles? Fund scientific research.

A team of US scientists just cured Alzheimer’s in mice — and there is now hope that the disease can be reversed in humans.

Then look at the surface of Mars.

Then look up to the top right.

Spot Mars' moon Phobos high in the sky.

Then notice the bright spot beside Phobos.

That's Earth.
