I had not heard of this real world example before, but am creating a system like this for my current WIP---and the culture clash when they encounter people gendering children. (lots of nose wrinkling confusion about *why* anyone would want to label kids that way)
Found the wiki about Coming Of Age and it is *very* informative! The ceremonies are gendered of course, but I did NOT know that in the OLD days, *before* the coming of age, young children were considered *not* gendered. Ancient Japan FTW!
