A family has handed over a 13th century book to the National Library of Norway. Conservator Chiara Palandri says its pages were made of calfskin parchment and that the cover appears to be hairy sealskin. The strap to hold the book together is thought to have been made from reindeer hide.
Eight pages bound in furry seal skin may be Norway's oldest book
The little book is so rare that the National Library of Norway is bringing in experts from around the world to learn more.

On August 12, 1971, 16-year-old me mailed the first story I ever wrote off on its first submission to my dream market, F&SF. My tale was quickly rejected. On July 17th, 2025, I finally sold a story to that magazine. Here's why I felt I had to withdraw that story. www.scottedelman.com/wordpress/20...

As someone who needs a window seat to avoid panic attacks, I find this all to be infuriating and worrisome.
United's hilarious response to the windowless window seat lawsuit:

"The use of the word 'window' in reference to a particular seat cannot reasonably be interpreted as a promise that the seat will have an exterior window view,"

United Airlines says a window seat doesn't need to have a window
Lawyers for United Airlines argued that the word "window" cannot reasonably be interpreted as a promise that the seat would have an exterior view.

I’m sad for Gen AI prompters.

They’ll never know the joy of creating something from scratch, sucking at it, and persevering through challenges to experience growth and renewed perspective and a deeper understanding of their craft.

That understanding travels through this world with you.

I've already read the 1st book in the series, and I'm very excited that Baba Yaga figures into the second. 👀

Fine Foods by Jules was in the Wilshire Center on the Miracle Mile. I can’t find any information about it, but it’s definitely got upscale deli vibes with a HUGE selection of sandwiches with Hollywood flair. Who wants to bite into Red Skelton?

This is the Viking runestone that I reference in A House Between Sea and Sky! It is a real (likely fake) thing.
#OnThisDay Nov 8, 1898: The Kensington Runestone is "discovered" on Olof Ohman's farm near Alexandria, Minnesota. Its engravings tell of Vikings who traveled here in 1362. Scholarly consensus classifies it as a hoax, but there remain true believers convinced the stone is authentic.

Aldi has a new cheese advent calendar in addition to the import one they’ve done for years! The new calendar is all Wisconsin cheeses, and judging by the trademarked names and variety, they may all be rebranded Carr Valley cheeses. Exciting!
