A desperate plea sent to me by a Minneapolis resident who's been on the front lines since the beginning of the ICE occupation:

YES. Observers have spent too much time worrying about anonymity and secrecy in an effort to avoid after-the-fact consequences. But those consequences are extremely unlikely - first, you’re doing nothing illegal, and second, they literally don’t have the legal manpower to prosecute almost anyone.
This is why the are already dropping the felony charges against the 22 folks arrested last week. They don't have the goods and no one to do the work to prosecute.

The top lawyer for Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Minnesota has left the agency, the same week an ICE attorney was removed after telling a district judge that “this job sucks” and that the Trump administration is “overwhelmed” with immigration cases.

To understand how much Alex Massie actually cares about women's safety: when I called out his transphobe-in-arms Nick Cohen for multiple acts of sexual misconduct against cis women, which eventually got him sacked, Massie went berserk at me.

Transphobia is a men's rights movement in drag.

Just to offer the counterpoint here, as I think it is very very important we do so: this is absolutely anticipatory obedience 101.
Much as university leaders might see it as their responsibility to “plan” for this possibility, in effect REF are getting to set the agenda without winning any election
Before anyone gets too angry about this, several things. (1) Universities in the UK, unlike the US, are pretty much under the financial and admin control of central govt. If RefUK moves to wipe them out, as they will, then some will choose life. (1/3) www.timeshighereducation.com/news/univers...
Universities try to woo Reform as party gains ground
Serious lobbying efforts under way, with right-wing party expected to be more sympathetic to elite universities than rest of the sector

On August 17, 2017, Noam Chomsky told the Washington Examiner that antifa was “a gift to the far right”.

In between those dates he met with Jeffrey Epstein in Tuscon.

glory to the martyrs who defend the republic
My gosh. Alex Pretti was notifying neighbors that Trump and Vance's agents were chasing a family. A mob of agents then tackled him and broke his rib.

He thought he was going to die.

Then the very next week, he came back out to support his neighbors.

And a mob of agents killed him.

For those outside the UK who may not have seen, we had a reckoning on media regulation 15 years ago, and the media won a decisive victory against meaningful regulation. TL;DR, they were caught hacking the phone of a murdered child, there was an enquiry, but they avoided all the recommendations…
The fundamental problem is that we have no effective regulation of the media here, our public service broadcaster is just very obviously regime media and our major privately run news publications are all owned by billionaires with editorial agendas that distort reality and degrade human rights.
Reading about the rise of Reform while living in the self-immolating US feels like an out of body experience. That anyone outside the US could look at a country collapsing in on itself and say, “Yes, some of that for us please!” is just surreal.

Minnesota has proven that the people will lead when our political & economic leaders will not

I used to roll my eyes sometimes when leftists would yammer on about the power of the people. I thought it was a bit naive & idealistic but it’s actually human nature

The location of Hernan Cortes' grave was formally a classified secret in independent Mexico for over a century to stop it being destroyed. When it was finally declassified in 1946, there were calls for the bones to be physically crushed and disposed of in a public ceremony.
The thing I find genuinely funny about "the Spanish conquistador in me" is how that all did not actually work out very well for Spain in the long run.

The people of Minnesota have executed one of the most impressive civil resistance campaigns I can remember:

- Organized a city wide general strike
- Maintained nonviolent discipline amidst violence
- Mobilized 10,000s in subzero temps to protest and watch ICE
- Flipped public opinion against ICE

the problem is that people have extrapolated Gaza policy, where Biden and by extension Harris really weren't much better to...everything else, which is just insane
He correctly points out that horrendous plagues of police brutality existed under both Dem and GOP administrations. But the idea that what ICE/CBP are doing is merely business as usual rather than an extreme escalation of the evil, and the *implication* that Harris would be invading MN too...?

Nonviolence is, in fact, working. This administration is weaker than it was a year ago. More and more of the public is becoming galvanized against it; its agents are being impeded.
Do you honestly think people in the civil rights movement and other nonviolent movements faced no violence themselves? They practiced nonviolence because it works, because the oppressor wants a shooting war, which is the war it will win
How's your non-violent working Mr Gandhi stancil? They will kill each and everyone of you right if they had the chance and you will still be writing Kumbaya.

yeah the very grim truth of nonviolence is that the two primary things it does are “demonstrate that violence will not move the opposition, that they can brutalize us and we will not abandon our cause” and “garner wider sympathy via being brutalized by the state”

What's making me really livid right now is thinking back to the years of commentary lecturing us that the rise of MAGA was rooted in a sense of righteous victimization by overbearing liberal elites, and sneering at those who insisted that it was fundamentally about domination and sadism all along.
They are telling us in unequivocal terms that if you show solidarity with immigrants who are in the literal crosshairs of Trump/MAGA, you're risking a death sentence.

whatever happens is going to make Yoon Yuk-Seol look like a genius in comparison
I’m assuming it will look a lot like the lead up to January 6th, except this time this time they’ll actually send the justice department out there and say they’re investigating “massive irregularities.”
