the best 2020s espionage black comedy is about the construction crew on the White House ballroom gradually realising that they're *all* spies from different countries, except for one undocumented immigrant who has to teach them how to do things

yeah Mitch clearly gambled that courts would take out trump (ergo his post impeachment speech) while preventing a GOP Schism and, well, he was wrong
If McConnell had wanted to convict, Senate would have convicted. McConnell decided to pass the buck. His reasons were pure power politics: he knew a vote to convict would blow up the party. I suspect he also thought court prosecution would end T but also mobilize T supporters against Ds: a "win-win"
It was not the next President's or Attorney General's job to do the damn job of the Republicans in Congress (& the Executive Branch on 1/6/21). The anger at Biden/Garland is fine, but it's wildly misdirected without greater anger at the Republicans who are responsible for all of this.

Elon Musk Plays Disinfo Telephone: How Oregon’s Mundane Voter Roll Cleanup Is Turned Into False Claim Of ‘Fake Voters’
I made the mistake of opening up X yesterday to look something up, and the very first post that appeared in my feed was a perfect, almost pedagogical example of how the game of “disinformation telephone” gets played. Let's walk through it, because understanding how this works is important. The game works like this: Someone takes a factual but largely unremarkable story, gives it a slight spin, and passes it along.

honestly reading this thread and thinking about why romance readers run straight at this shit head first no matter how much everyone else says it's hopeless.

our brains are literally wired for it.
Watching doc about resilience that reaffirms many changes I made last few years to my mental outlook (I read a LOT of brain books). Brains are hallucination engines. If the story is the world is shit, everything is fucked, brain reframes every interaction this way. It impacts behavior; shuts us down

Repeating a "we're fucked" narrative is the fastest way to learned helplessness. I know this intimately, having sat in the cage myself for two years. But while we don't have control over our stressors, we have control over our *reactions* to the stressors. Our thoughts, emotions, THAT,we can control

I remember as a kid these movies would come out evey two years or so about a dapper and somewhat effete English spy bounding around the world foiling the evil plans of a henry ford type billionaire industrialist.

If there's *one* damn thing humans are good at, it's collectively digging ourselves out of the dumb fucking messes we've collectively dug ourselves into.
If we do. Whether we are capable of it as a species is still an open question, and while I believe we can, that’s not rigorous in a way that I can say it with anything but gut check level certainty.

Here's a next-level chess question the oil companies must be asking themselves:

What's the ROI on pulling crappy Venezuelan oil out of the ground after the Iran regime is replaced by a West-friendly government that's granted sanctions relief?
