most relevant fact for a by-election in Gorton and Denton is that Lib Dem internals suggested they had a chance of winning a by-election for the predecessor seat in May 2017 if Theresa May had not called an election, as Tim Farron said at the time:

www.theguardian.com/politics/201...
Tim Farron: ‘If you want to prevent hard Brexit then the Lib Dems have a clear message’
The Lib Dem leader says his party is ruling out a coalition with Labour or the Tories, and he is hoping that anti-Brexit sentiment lifts its vote

hold on, a Lord who was a key member of the Royal Household and was also one of the last people to see Elizabeth II alive wrote a Seventh Doctor/Ace Big Finish story for Doctor Who that nearly got to TV before the show was cancelled????

very UK politics journo-coded to act like the UK is going to have to make this decision alone, as opposed to, as on multiple other big international issues, acting in concert with, to pick some obvious examples, France, Germany, Canada and Australia
There’s going to be a motion of censure at the UN and Starmer is going to have a decision to make.

Christmas Ident Calendar Day 15. BBC2's '2' stayed with Wallace & Gromit in 1995 to promote A Close Shave, which was watched by 10.62m on Christmas Eve. This presentation won a BAFTA for Best Graphic Design. Look out for the nod, the wink & the raised glass at the end.

personally rate the chances of Reform’s Senedd and Holyrood groups making it to the end of 2026 without a suspension/defection/resignation/split at 0%
one reason i think that Reform will probably implode in power is (1) that the people who join Reform tend to be the dregs of UK society and (2) they don't actually have a plan on fixing the UK outside of "what if we did Thatcherism even harder while deporting all the immigrants"

Catherine Connolly's explicit position is that Ireland should not spend any money on any military equipment through EU programmes to stop things like this from happening

which doesn't sound like a belief in Irish sovereignty or neutrality at all, to me
Quite breathtaking story - military grade drones at Dublin airport which flew on the path Zelensky's plane took. The drones reached the flight path of his plane exactly the time it should have been there, but just missed it because Zelensky arrived ahead of schedule:
Four unidentified military-style drones breached no-fly zone to target Zelenskyy's arrival in Dublin
Gardaí are investigating whether the drones took off from land in Dublin or from an undetected ship.

annoying that the UK has only had one by-election in this Parliament, and Ireland now have two fun ones on the go

even the Senedd and Holyrood have had one recently ffs

Scotland shouldn’t make a World Cup song, they should just re-release stone-cold banger “Don’t Come Home Too Soon” again

this is a ludicrous article

if you think James Bond has a rigid canon and that films should respect the events of previous ones, you're not just ignorant of the franchise, but you have no business making creative decisions tbh
James Bond’s death in No Time to Die is causing a nightmare for the next film. Writers are stuck because Bond “was blown to pieces.”

Anthony Horowitz, author of three 007 novels, says:

“You can't have him wake up in shower and saying it was all a dream."

weird thought: if Labour do properly collapse at the next GE, they’ll likely be left with a weird group of MPs who survived on random local dynamics/vote splits/personal votes, some of whom will potentially be doomed to lose in 2033/34 no matter what

as I said when Jeremy Corbyn and Catherine Connolly said the same thing: this is, explicitly, a pro-Russia political position
There is always money for war, never for the poor.

Every penny spent on bombs, tanks and missiles is stolen from our homes, schools and hospitals.

We are not going to take it anymore.

Because from where we are now, it seems, really

that everything is growing in a thousand different ways

that the soil is soaked through with old blood and with relatives who were buried here, or close to here, and they are giving rise to what is happening, or can you tell me otherwise?
Quick preview of numbers being released tomorrow… special for my Bluesky peeps:

Alaska Survey Research
October 10-15, 2025
N=2,083 adults (1,957 RV, 1,708 LV)

2026 Alaska US Senate (LV)

Mary Peltola (D) 48%
Dan Sullivan (R) 46%
Undecided 6%

Sullivan’s negative hits 50% for the first time.

Macron needs to call in the experts in running a country with zero political leadership and no chance of forming a stable government, and simply let the Northern Irish Civil Service run France for a bit
