DO NOT SELF REJECT YOUR FOUNTAIN PEN CURIOSITY IF YOU'RE A LEFTY!!! You can enjoy writing with a fountain pen too.

But if you're just not interested in FPs, that's also fine! Just don't disparage it!
everyone should own a pilot kakuno with a converter

they're cheap, refillable, usable for art and writing, and you can put any colour of ink you want inside

there's an entire community of left-handed fountain pen users so do not self-reject if you are a lefty

We went through SO MUCH of this at MetaFilter and our users were SO MAD about it when it would come up (meaning/use distinction, "show me the policy," "didn't you understand my reference?") I think we can all agree that a violent rhetoric policy at least needs to be enforced more often than monthly.

Of all the potential moderation policies a site needs to have, the violent rhetoric one is consistently the one that causes the most uproar, because people will almost never agree that two posts are equivalent if they are directed at two different targets, even if the words are identical.

But even without that, the violent rhetoric policy is a fucking bitch to create and apply consistently. It often comes down to single words in a post: "I will" may be a violation while "I would" might not be, etc.

So these two trends—AI as smokescreen for management's ulterior motives/misplaced belief in its hype, and AI as an automation system for producing cheap knockoff art and writing (at the expense of artists and writers)—are what I think are the biggest impacts of AI on jobs so far.

More in the piece:
What’s really going on with AI and jobs?
Record-breaking layoff reports, Amazon's mass firings, and a slump in entry level employment. Is AI behind it all?

In the 1950s psychiatrist Fredric Wertham's book Seduction of the Innocent incited a moral panic that nearly destroyed the US comics industry. Professor Carol Tilley, U of I, is the academic who went thru his papers and proved Wertham had faked most of his data. And Carol is a hilarious comics nerd!

😊 Left handed fountain pens are amazing works of craftsmanship. The fact that they work differently isn't something I'd thought about before dating someone that's left handed. Like, in hindsight, it makes *sense*, but.

My fave brand for ink usually comes from Pilot. Don't get nibblers-

I'm a voiceover actor, you've heard me on your TV, radio or the web over the 36 years of my career. My bread-and-butter work used to be narrating training films and corporate videos, used to be at least 1/3 of my income. MOST of that work is now AI. My agents are dying, fellow talent are struggling.
How is AI *really* impacting jobs?

Henley Chiu, the CTO of Revealera, a jobs data analysis firm, analyzed 180 million jobs listings in 2024 and 2025, in an effort to find out. Chiu found an:

-8% drop in all jobs postings
-~30% drop in art, photography, writing jobs
-22% drop in journalism jobs

the deck made these devices that were up to 2x more expensive feel like kids toys in terms of build quality

this thread but especially this point is honestly where I'm at. the only thing that was ever going to take Trump down is the GOP deciding he can't hurt them personally anymore as much as he is hurting them collectively.

that party is not made of patriots willing to go down for god & country.
They're mostly cowards, but they're also certainly all opportunists.

They're all about to walk off a political cliff with healthcare, so they're going to be even more eager for cover and distraction in the new year.
