My mom managed to catch the flu this weekend (in NH) while in a hospital ward that requires masks. It is going around and is a nasty one!
When we visited my uncle in the ER the other night, out in central mass. the Heywood hospital was telling everyone walking in that they ought to wear masks because the hospital was full of flu patients.
Mass General in Boston, one of our top hospitals, emailed me this. Wear your masks, folks:

"As of December 29th, you will see staff wearing masks more often at Mass General Brigham locations. We do this during periods of high respiratory virus activity to protect our patients and care teams."

Friendly reminder that Trump only cares about himself, so he would only care about bulletproof glass if he thought the next inauguration will be for him…
Trump on the ballroom: "It's bigger than I told you. It's, you know -- after realizing we're gonna do the inauguration in that building, it's got all bulletproof glass, it's got all drone, they call it drone-free roof. It's dronessss -- won't touch it. It's a big beautiful safe building."

Show me proof of a donation to World Central Kitchen. From now til the 31st of December, 11:59 pm ET, for every $20 raised, I’ll reveal a new type of imaginary ranch dressing from my frankly unhinged list of imaginary ranch dressings.

when people ask my mom why she's wearing a mask, she says, "it helps me mind my own business"
Also, never ask someone why they're wearing a mask! Just don't! You're not entitled to people's health info!

Episode 47: Elon Musk

Walter Isaacson’s definitive biography poses the question: is it ok to be a pathetic, cruel, lying reactionary if it kind of helps you build cars?

Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

This is excellent and dead-on (& also an entertaining read!)
Apparently I'm doing this -- my open letter to that open latter about AI in writing and publishing. I emerged from Hibernation Week to write it, so god only knows how much sense it makes. But at least a human wrote it, so that's nice.

Bonus: picture of my "cat," sweet baby Boomba.
My Open Letter To That Open Letter About AI In Writing And Publishing
The tl;dr before you get into this post is this: the SFWA came out, said that some AI usage was okay enough in books for the authors of those books to not to be disqualified from winning a Nebula a…

Shameless self-promotion at the end of the year: my second book of poetry, WE THE DESTROYERS, came out from @riotinyourthroat.bsky.social in your throat this year:

I am obviously biased but it's a pretty good book and you should read it!
We the Destroyers by Laura Passin - Riot in Your Throat Press
We the Destroyers is a collection of poetry about the end of days. It’s a collection about the pandemic, about grief and chaos and loss. But it’s also a collection about survival and redemption and ho...

We didn't survive and thrive as a species because we had warriors or hunters - pretty much every omnivore can manage that.

We did so because we developed Grandmothers, and domesticated Dogs.

Community is what defines us as a species, and every "self-reliant" libertarian shitweasel be damned.
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

I will never watch your podcast because the whole purpose of podcasts is to entertain me while I walk/drive/wash dishes/do something that isn't sitting on the couch watching a thing.
I will never watch your podcast. Most of the time I'm not even in the same room. Just stick to audio. I'm sure it's cheaper.

Preordered and following, based on how interesting I found this thread. 😊
The response to The Red Sacrament has been overwhelmingly positive so far. I'm so grateful and happy and truly can't wait for it to reach readers in 2026! But I've also had less positive responses from fans of Anne Rice/TVC, and I want to clarify some things about the book.
