So if you didn’t know this, many of the green paints used for western home decor (and elsewhere) in the 18th-mid 19th century were arsenic based, both because the colour was vibrant and because it had the added bonus of killing bedbugs, mosquitoes, etc.

It also explains a lot about society idk
that's wonderful... thought I hope the arsenical green is modern paing

I begged Jenny to write this and am so grateful she did.

Sex scene are craft. They are characterization. They are worldbuilding. They are storytelling.

The fact that we're culturally too uncomfortable with sex to recognize that is not the fault of well written sex scenes!

I keep thinking about all of the people who were NOT hired as part of this exercise. All the real world production crew. The actors. The caterers supporting real world shoots. So many people with real skills not being paid. So. Many. Creative. People. Not. Being. Paid.

Imagine taking more time than it would take to do something traditionally. I bet it would take a builder longer to build a house out of jelly instead of brick, because jelly isn't brick.

I said it before, will say it again -- generative AI fetishizes "ideas" while sneering at effort, execution, and education. That, despite Gen-AI being built on and out of other people's effort, execution and education.
A.I. and the Fetishization Of Ideas
In writing and in dispensing my (very dubious, probably shady) writing advice, I am often keen to note that ideas are bullshit. Most writers treat them like precious gems when really, ideas are lik…

One of the many reasons AI can't produce good writing is it can't hate its own writing. It can't think to itself "Maybe I'm illiterate" during the writing process. And that's essential

The way tech companies constantly do stuff that nobody asked for really tells you a lot about their bigger ideology. They tell themselves that you will like it over time. What they mean is you’ll learn to endure it, or you’ll give up. quality of UI is not actually anywhere on their radar
new iOS update is sleek and also defaults in Music to “you must want songs transition as they would on a dance floor.” so many people will wonder why they can’t just listen to an album. Apps > Music > Song Transitions > toggle off.

This picture has been making the rounds again, and is being misidentified again.

This is a GOOSEFISH.

This is NOT a tasselled wobbegong shark.

It’s a great pic. I get why people are very excited about it. But it’s as easy to give it the right name as the wrong one.

Love to see the Sedgwick County Zoo putting out a good explainer on why GenAI slop videos of animals are a problem & how to identify them! It’s succinct, easy to read, and doesn’t shame people for not knowing better. A+ useful link to share with family and friends.

this is so incredibly embarrassing. why on earth would you ask an LLM to generate fake archival resources when you could instead use a Victorian antiquarian
Folks might not know a lot of people are getting *very* upset that the materials they request are not available in the libraries/archives they're requesting from.

We're getting lots here at the Library of Virginia: requests of documents likely surfaced by large language models that *do not exist*.
I wish a notice like this wasn't necessary.

What grinds my gears is when ppl point out “hey you got some antisemitism in your antiZionism” and instead of being like “shit, thanks, lemme read some sources on that trope so I can avoid it” the response is often “fuck off Zionist shill” regardless of the politics of the person pointing it out
antizionism isn’t inherently antisemitism but a hell of a lot of antisemites use antizionism as cover and way too many antizionists fall for it over and over again
As much as I want us to guard against characterizing criticism of Israeli policy as inherently antisemitic man it really fucking sucks that there are so many pro-Palestinian voices out there who truly could not spot Good Ole Fashioned Judenhaß if it bit them on the ass
