this is a great point. self righteous prigs are very rarely presented as heroic in hollywood films. but that really was william garrison, as near as I can tell. kind of Sumner too.
the key to this kind of asshole though is 'stick in the mud' asshole. we have asshole antiheroes in fiction but theyre usually rule-breakers
This brought on by reading about pre civil war abolitionists. These people were unambiguously right in the most pressing moral struggle of their time. You’d also probably fucking kill yourself if ever stranded on a desert island with half of them.

Read Jim's whole thread! I also want to add some historical context. During the 1918 pandemic, there was so much confusion because many scientists still thought that a bacteria, not a virus caused the flu (because, as Jim notes, we couldn't even see viruses under a microscope yet).

Never watched “Suits” but had heard it was enjoying a second life on streamers. Walked in my 12 yr old watching the pilot & I am HOOKED. Could write a dissertation on it. Came out in heyday of “prestige” TV but isn’t “prestige.” Has network-esque churn-out-plots but isn’t network. Characters ROCK…
