A key reason why I (usually) align with the new liberal/neoliberal wing is that it presents a fundamentally positive-sum view of the world where even difficult issues are ultimately solvable with patience, pragmatism, and good policy

This is, I think, simultaneously both optimistic *and true*

You can build a 'conservative university' that's still a totally respectable university but the thing is that means you're getting a place like BYU, not the Epic Center For Lib Owning.

This is a key lesson of Clausewitz: war is the use of force to gain some kind of political objective. Strategy is the understanding of how your use of force is to actually get you what you want.

War without strategy is sheer stupidity.
hesitant to step in on this but I think people pushing for armed resistance really need to think about the goals of armed resistance and the mechanisms by which it could possibly achieve those goals.

One thing we really need as a country is to start getting ppl to appreciate MLK & co. as hard-nosed, ruthless political strategists who took on an entire Confederacy’s worth of murderous authoritarian oligarchies and won.

And they actively kicked out doomers and edgy weirdos from their movement.
so the "leftist" position here is that if the ICE thug tries to intimidate you, you walk away with your head down like charlie brown? is that it?

It’s easy to watch the news and feel overwhelmed or even helpless at everything going on. I need you to fight that feeling.

I’m an optimist. You have to be when you strap yourself to a rocket for a living. But there’s real reason to be hopeful this year and l’ll tell you why.

it honestly checks out that the same people who thought Biden could magically cancel all student loan debt and pass Medicare for all also think that Trump can magically cancel the midterms. literally just green lantern theory of the presidency

One thing that people don't understand is that the community base opposing ICE is extremely committed to avoiding anything that could trigger rioting, I think largely because of the 2020 experience. Trump thinks he can redo 2020 but shoot the protesters this time, but Minneapolis isn't the same.
Ironically a lot of the base of Minnesota's activitists' response was laid as a result of the riots following Chauvin's murder of George Floyd. That's part of why I feel like this administration doesn't understand who they're messing with. The Twin Cities got organized in 2020 and remains so.

This is incredibly inaccurate on both counts
the rule of law in the us is very interesting because it completely depends on people acting with virtue and propriety because the law, let alone the constitution, leaves massive legal gaps of behavior that is lawful but awful. exactly the same as the roman republic, by the way
had a really interesting conversation last night with an investor and died-in-the-wool capitalist where the conclusion was something like, most Americans don't realize that functioning capital markets and the rule of law are America's actual superpowers and those things could absolutely end

I'd absolutely grain of salt this (one poll from a mid pollster) but frankly I do not want either of them winning a primary
Presidential Polling:

🔵 Harris: 49%
🔴 Vance: 42%

🔴 Vance: 45%
🔵 Newsom: 41%

the constitution has many flaws but addressing our current circumstances is not among them; the framers were in fact quite concerned about this kind of thing and were clear that it should not happen here

what they did not and could not guard against is the people in charge ignoring their plain text
As it happens though, the framers of the US constitution did say it: in the 4th amendment, the 5th, the 10th, etc.

What they didn’t provide for is federal immigration enforcement of any kind, only “a uniform rule of naturalization.” Nor did they give the federal government a plenary police power.
It goes without saying that in the US you’re not supposed to have a masked secret police that snatches people off the streets without knowing if they’ve committed a crime. That’s about as basic a requirement for a democracy as exists.

Inshallah something is happening

Watching Assad and his cronies AND the mullahs eat shit within a year and a half of each other will not make up for everything else going on, but by god it'll come close
If the figures we're getting out of Iran are in the right league, this weekend was, I think, one of the bloodiest state crackdowns of all time. People are talking 12,000-20,000 dead; for comparison Hungary in 1956 was about 2,500, Tiananmen - across country, in multiple cities - probably 1000+

I like how she says almost the exact same thing many other Dems have been saying over the last few weeks and instead of being criticized for it like everyone else has been she gets praised
AOC: I want everybody to understand that the cuts to your health care are what’s paying for this. You get screwed over to pay a bunch of thugs in the street that are shooting mothers in the face.

This is the sort of statement that was expected from every university president and law firm partner over the last year. That those statements weren’t made played a huge part in where we are now and people will remember.
Jerome Powell: "This is about whether the Fed will be able to continue to set interest rates based on evidence and economic conditions—or whether instead monetary policy will be directed by political pressure or intimidation."
