This is interesting — a recent study of mode share (the % share of transportation trips by car, transit, walking, biking etc) relative to city size and income levels in almost 800 cities in 61 countries. Interesting results. HT @davidzipper.bsky.social

Just how much space is actually given to cars vs other modes? 👇
A new study says automobiles are given a disproportionate and amount of space on city streets

Physically protected bike lanes don't come from thin air. If You Want To Win, You've Got To Fight-- and today is the LAST day you can pre-order the book from @islandpress.bsky.social islandpress.org/books/if-you... because starting tomorrow you can only just regularly order it since it'll be out.

For taxpayers, every piece of cycling infrastructure is a gift that keeps on giving.

An asset that returns annual savings in congestion, pollution, maintenance, safety and healthcare over its lifetime.

Stop asking whether your city can afford to invest in cycling. Ask whether it can afford not to.

We also need some actual planning and zoning from Weehawken, West New York, and North Bergen. Big new buildings going up with zero retail. No coffee, bagels, restaurants, retail, diapers, daycares. Just lots and lots of parking. Then the new residents move-in and immediately complain about traffic.

We've seen the same arguments being made over on this side of the Hudson about #RiverRoad redesign
"We are pro-bikes. We just think this is a really bad idea."

It's like NIMBY Mad Libs! As we write in the book, it's actually somewhat encouraging that bike lane opponents can't come up with new things to say.
Brooklyn neighbors fear new bike lanes on busy McDonald Avenue will be dangerous
Windsor Terrace neighbors are growing concerned the city's plan to redesign the busy four-lane corridor with bike lanes will make it less safe.

NEW RESEARCH: Parked cars can account for 10 percent of the surface areas of some cities. It turns out that their albedo (reflectivity) can significantly contribute to the urban heat island effect.

Dark-coloured cars are the worst, making the air around them 3.8°C hotter vs nearby asphalt road.

China’s cycling resurgence can best be admired at street level, where cities like Kunshan are building infrastructure of incredibly high quantity and quality.

Cohesive networks that offer both practical connectivity and inviting usability; with abundant width, shade, protection, and natural beauty.

Trigger warning.

“In crashes, SUVs are more likely to strike vital organs in the core of adults’ bodies & heads of children. Hitting pedestrians above their center of gravity means they’re more likely to be knocked forward & down and then be driven over.”

Plus more likely to hit in the 1st place.

What's it like being hit by a car going 40 mph? It exerts similar force as falling off a 54-foot ladder.

Kudos to the Virginia DMB for this powerful demonstration in Richmond.
