This seems very familiar somehow … People are slowly waking up to the fact that these projects bring more crash deaths, more air and noise pollution, and ultimately more traffic jams, making everything worse for drivers too. While wasting $Billions. @turnpiketrap.org @mikiesherrill.bsky.social

Pretty sure this has not been done before, here’s my story on what this means.

I resent that my tolls go towards expanding highways rather than making the highways safer. My mother (and many other people I know) no longer feel safe driving on them and have stopped. We have a safety crisis that is ignored by these agencies. Please put the money to better use.
NJ motorists are paying higher tolls in 2026, seemingly at every turn.
In many cases, these increases are the result of policies that generally allow public agencies to enact modest, annual hikes to keep up with inflation, and head off the need for larger, one-time increases.

If there was a spot for bus lanes/stations in a BRT dedicated lane setup on a highway in North Jersey, Route 3/46 would be the logical place.

The current setup is so bad and dangerous for riders.

These stops are among the most unusual in the state, located on highway shoulders, entrance ramps, and narrow concrete islands.

We could also extend the PATH to Newark Airport and expand the light rail to connect the two cities. These projects are shovel ready. We lack the political will (funds) in NJ to truly build great public transportation systems. Instead, there's an obsession with more lanes and more highway.
Please, can Jersey City and Newark government do this for route 1&9 connecting New Jersey's two largest cities together and making it safe for pedestrians and cyclists.
Zohran just went out and fixed the Williamsburg Bridge bike entrance. Just did it. No faffing, no nonsense. Bam. Fixed.

There are, right now while you're reading this, 7 grams of microplastics in your brain, and most of it came from car tires.

That's 0.5% of the entire weight of your brain. Is literally car tires. And you convert more of your body to car tires every day.
Very proud of @naemas.bsky.social and my story yesterday on how thousands of the estimated 16,000 known plastic chemicals get into our food.

It's interesting that people think congestion pricing only works if you have New York density and transit -- folk wisdom.

Congestion pricing can work anywhere you use it. Most car trips in the USA are under 3 miles. Congestion pricing removes both implied and explicit subsidies to drive everywhere.
I’m not sure there are national implications? I can count on one hand (SF, Boston, DC, Chicago) the number of cities in America that have transit networks robust enough that congestion pricing is a viable policy. America isn’t really setup for it.
The most under-reported story of the year, IMO, is about the national implications of the extreme and wildly popular success of congestion pricing in New York City.

When you remove cars from cities, you not only make money for things the city needs; you make people in the city much, much happier.

This. And also, I have yet to see even one public statement or document that rules out the project being a #TurnpikeTrojanHorse. I.e., building a huge roadbed striped for 4 car lanes and suspiciously wide shoulders—which, after the project “ends,” can easily be painted as new lanes, “for safety.”

This is something that bothers me when people take an us vs them in neighborhood issues @ transportation. Everyone actually wants the same thing... less traffic.
The point I wish got emphasized more is that the big winners from congestion pricing are *people who urgently need to drive*. Because they are ones that travel times really matter for. I always thought that instead of congestion pricing it should be called "free streets" - free from other cars.
this is incredible stuff. most state DOTs would spend tens of billions on highway expansions to try and see numbers like this (that wouldn’t even pan out anyway thanks to induced demand lol)

* Vehicle traffic: -11%
* Foot traffic: +3.4%
* Storefront vacancy: -0.9%
* Pollution: -22%
* Revenue for mass transit: $548M

So YES this has been a huge success.
