Worth it to spare us from Andy Cohen kicking off 2026 by drunkenly complaining about taxes on CNN
EXCLUSIVE: @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social will be sworn in as mayor on midnight on January 1 inside the old abandoned City Hall subway station, saying that he sees the venue as a symbol for the aims of his upcoming administration.

Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

I have an upcoming episode of my podcast all about Prohibition, and something I did not realize about the amendment banning alcohol (which was a nativist Protestant fundamentalist project its core) was it was instrumental in disgusting most of the country into creating the New Deal coalition.
The U.S. is undergoing its fastest religious shift in modern history, marked by a rapid increase in the religiously unaffiliated and numerous church closures nationwide.

“Went viral” is an old stock phrase in journalism that really does not capture the dynamic of how X dot Com has been tuned to give people like the one specific legislator here the power to intentionally cause this kind of outcome
Texas A&M University will not reinstate a lecturer who was fired after a video of her teaching about gender identity in a children’s literature class went viral, despite a faculty appeals panel unanimously concluding that her dismissal was not justified.
Texas A&M won’t reinstate fired lecturer despite findings
A vice chancellor upheld the firing of Melissa McCoul, seen in a viral video being confronted by a student on her gender identity teachings, saying the termination was done with “good cause.”

Love the amount of pure BS that makes it into MTA press releases these days.

One-way tickets expiring in less than 24 hours is "giving riders more flexibility" than tickets valid for 60 days?

Does @mta.info think we are complete idiots?

The real flexibility being added here is now the assistant conductor has the flexibility to read the business AND the sports sections of the Post instead of doing the second ticket check after Jamaica

NOTHING in these changes to full tickets delivers any sort of increased flexibility or value to riders.

It does, however, make things much easier for LIRR and its conductors, who are now under even less pressure to actually do their jobs and collect tickets. www.thelirrtoday.com/2025/09/mta-...

Another way to think about this is as if Fahrenheit is a percentage measure for heat. In a temperate climate, temps rarely go below 0 or above 100, and an ideal day is usually about 65% hot.
Jack De Quidt once said that the only real benefit to Fahrenheit is how it allows people to measure heat in a way that feels *emotionally* correct. for example, "it must be 100° outside!" versus "it is a scorching 38° outside." you don't really need to explain how hot 100 feels. it feels 100 hot

As a union guy myself, allow me to ask:

Where in their collective agreement does it denote that they are the first line of defense against crime?

When your union president is spouting contractual violations, maybe it's time for a different president.
Angling for the coveted John Samuelsen nativist endorsement with policy ignorance. Will TWU leadership fall for it and back an anti-labor Republican?
