Wish I'd kept a "no blood for oil" sign from 2003 so I could dust it off with a sigh

Got a tip that the Curbed Seattle archives are down. Super bummed. This is always a possibility with the State of Things but it hits a little different when it was your baby for a few years.

He... knows that the history has always been there, right?
Don’t get me wrong, he also objects strenuously to a shifted emphasis from “Western history” to [gasp] “global history.”

lol both things he calls "tyrannous invasions of private life" are very much part of his job
The reason this Harvard history professor decided he was done with one of the best and most privileged jobs in the world was, in his own words, because he was forced to lecture in a mask during peak Covid.

I’m not making this up.

Aw, dang. It was always a delight to see him on screen—one of those character actors that made every appearance feel like running into an old buddy. RIP. www.the-independent.com/arts-enterta...

I have abandoned several corporate-track Stardew Valley saves
even new vegas can't make the evil playthrough interesting, and let me tell you: if you think you're making a better-written game than new vegas, you're almost certainly wrong

that said, i really enjoyed my demonic playthrough of Wrath of the Righteous and have heard good things about lich
I don't know why i always end up playing the Paragon/good side in RPGs, even though I sometimes plan to do the darker/bad choices

it happens every time.

USPS quietly changed its postmark rules — mail is no longer dated when you drop it off. The “official” date is when it hits automated sorting — sometimes days later

Which could have major implications for mail in voting — it’s a clever way to disenfranchise voters that’s going largely overlooked

who could forget tucker screaming for his rights to want to fuck an m&m
i feel like i'm insane when i'm the only one who remembers Tucker's brown M&M monologue

I think what websites don’t understand is you don’t want to “earn a fan badge.” And when they send you a “congratulations,” it’s mortifying and you immediately stop going to the site.

I got accepted to Willamette's MFA program!
Every year around this time I do the same thread and it has been a lot of fun.

Tell me something you did in 2025 that you're proud of that you want everyone to know about. Did you write a book? Did you get a promotion? Did you survive the year?

I want to spend the end of the year celebrating you.

Unlike a regular American, he doesn’t have the mannerisms of the Queen of England, and is more reminiscent of Barack Obama.

Controversially, I don’t believe there is any particular way a ‘regular American’ moves his arms when walking
This is how Christopher Caldwell begins his essay on Zohran Mamdani for the Claremont Review of Books.

Why are these people such freaks?

A middle school principal, asked why he didn’t do anything after hearing of nude deepfakes of students: “Kids lie a lot… about all kinds of things. They blow lots of things out of proportion… So to my knowledge, at 2 o’clock when I checked again, there were no pictures.”

Driving an old Prius is fun and special because it for the most part is a reliable car that can handle a lot of mileage and carry a surprisingly large amount of cargo for what it is but then sometimes you get an alert on the dash that just says PROBLEM for exactly two seconds

YES, the thing that makes Muppet Christmas Carol special is Michael Caine working as if the Muppets around him were human actors.
I do think the key for things like Home Alone, Muppet Christmas Carol, etc. is that the actors fully commit to the bit

I feel like similar films made now lean too heavily into doing it ironically

Revisiting some aughts rock n roll stuff because my kid just got into Yo Gabba Gabba and uh has literally nobody just straight up asked Swami John Reis if he has any personal connection to Hinduism? That era of music journalism was so sycophantic.
