This is so fucking goofy. The context of being used in an extremely pilloriable article about Louis C.K. makes it goofier, but I get the sense after poking around a bit that writers for the New Yorker deliberately avoid using words that could summon the umlaut.

I'd actually love to see some deeper dives into rural coastal community responses to the Trump administration's priorities. Anecdotally, I go to the Long Beach, WA area a few times a year and the shift from abundant Trump signs to "we stand with immigrants" signs was ABRUPT
