Including disabled people in our utopian futures pushes back against a eugenicist ideal.
I have a friend who said, of Starfleet Academy, that this took them out of it - that seeing a person in a wheelchair in the 32nd century seemed unrealistic, since medicine in Star Trek "should be able to cure whatever was wrong with them."

That's not the case, for any number of possible reasons.

Not to brag, but I also just started the dishwasher.

Big day over here.
I did laundry.

Please clap.

No, really, I could use the validation today.

Ooooh, adding this one to my list. Who wants to read it with me?
If you'd like a brief escape from the global chaos, I recommend reading REEFS OF TIME, my latest book. It will take you to tropical islands to hunt for fossils and underwater to living reefs, which are somehow both fragile and resilient (as are we). #scicomm #nonfiction #coral #fossilfriday

A lot of people really don’t realize that there is a vast amount of information out there that is not online and plausibly never will be, or can’t be.
I think that's a point that will surprise a lot of people. There's a lot of calling the internet capable of accessing "the sum of all human knowledge" and such that I think gives people the impression that any and all records exist online somewhere.

If the old people in my family could please STOP IT with the health scares and crises that would be really nice. Or at least get together and work out a crisis schedule so they don't overlap.

I was a guest speaker at a middle school today to share my expertise in teaching space science. Told a bunch of sixth graders not to use AI as they research for their projects and stressed how important and okay it was for them to just... not know an answer. ❤️ To not make it up. (AI makes it up.)

Hear Ye! Hear Ye! #2026MMM

(With a hat-tip to the Dropkick Murphys)

The season's upon us, it's that time of year!
Science & carnage, there's battles to cheer,
there's twists to these plots
and there's stings to be stung,
there's research to do
and plenty of fun!
a man wearing a feathered hat says " hear ye hear ye "
Alt: Stephen Colbert rings a bell wearing a large feathered tricorn hat shouting "Hear Ye! Hear Ye!"

If the government can take away your voting rights for a felony conviction, and they also decide what constitutes a felony, and they also decide who’s charged with the felony, and they also decide who’s prosecuted for the felony, you don’t have a right to vote.
Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger endorsed a constitutional amendment to automatically restore voting rights to people with felony convictions when they leave prison. State lawmakers passed the amendment and it will now appear on the state ballot.
