If the government can take away your voting rights for a felony conviction, and they also decide what constitutes a felony, and they also decide who’s charged with the felony, and they also decide who’s prosecuted for the felony, you don’t have a right to vote.
Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger endorsed a constitutional amendment to automatically restore voting rights to people with felony convictions when they leave prison. State lawmakers passed the amendment and it will now appear on the state ballot.

My kid just had a 20-minute sobbing meltdown about the unfairness of the world because the piece of cake he got for dessert was, in his opinion, too small.

How's your evening going?

there is NOTHING stopping you from taking a plastic grocery bag into a gas station and filling up the bag with fountain soda and then drinking it with a big piece of aquarium tubing except for intervention from the gas station staff and the lack of structural integrity inherent to the bag's design

I’ll call it “lessons from an unwilling immigration attorney.”

I saw this take before I had to run and teach today, so I've had 4 hrs to build a head of steam about it. Still, I'm gonna try to be nice. All due respect, I expect better from people who have all the resources in the world to research a thing AND a giant megaphone with which to share knowledge. 1/
I understand why people are exhausted by AI hype, and why those of us squarely in the corner of "human dignity uber alles" see AI doomerism as self-serving hype, but I *really* think people on the left broadly need to start thinking seriously about the possibiltiy of the hype being...true.

The problem is, the hype of AI is always so clearly manufactured. It’s sold as essential but mysteriously so — rarely is it portrayed as making life better; it’s sold as doing things WE want to keep doing. We want it to inventory our fridge and detect cancer, not make music and replace us at work.

Now there IS genuinely some work which LLMs can do, but the fact LLMs can do it is itself proof the work is bullshit (inventing summaries for pointless makework meetings, generating insincere marketing spam) but acknowledging THAT would mean admitting that our economic model is a complete charade

The neighborhood crows are now happy to hang out near my office window. I toss them peanuts through the window and watch them eat their snack. A few are brave enough to eat while I'm sitting right there.

Yes, I am an old lady who is trying to win the love of a crow family. This is where I am now.
