ICE kidnapped an elderly Hmong man in St. Paul, Minnesota. The temperature was sub-zero, and he was taken only wearing shorts and Crocs, and no shirt. (1/18/26)

I feel like people think the goal is vengeance rather than defense. We still live here.
Guys we’re not gonna destroy our own city or each other for these Nazi shitloafs, stop fantasizing about doing that it’s weird.

All these other cities are like “we’d do x, y, and z to ICE, we’d be way more badass than Minneapolis” and as a Minneapolitan I have to tell you this is a weird fucking thing to be competitive about, it is an absolute hell and a really bleak thing to be fantasy role playing.

If you live in the Cities, an easy way to help immigrant families in hiding is: laundry! Laundromats are ICE magnets, so people without washers need help.

The People’s Laundry will drop off laundry to your door to wash and dry and pick up a few days later:

as much as i've known that this isn't any sort of competition with regard to who's had it worse with ICE operations, i appreciate that this observation is also being made as it's validating to what's been feeling really fucking excessive & violent to our community here in MN
It's 10am in Minneapolis and rapid response is underwater, reports of chemicals deployed already.

As others have pointed out, the ratio of feds (with more arriving) to residents and square mileage here is extreme compared to what we experienced in Chicago.

We are in freefall.

You are not imagining it!!! Agents have been more aggressive and more emboldened, quicker to fly into a rage. And the community being more organized/prepared to confront them bc they've seen this play out in other cities = feds know they have even less time to execute a kidnapping
considering unraveled is based out of chicago & were on the ground covering things during the chicago ICE raids, that's been their observation as well. which is validating to people here in a sense because shit always feels more intense while it's happening & no, we're not imagining this up here.

if you're shopping for cold weather gear, stuff from the normal store that *looks* warm will not work for you here.

the keyword you are looking for is Arctic expedition gear, although it's actually warmer in the Arctic right now.

does that thing have a temp rating? no? get something else that does

you probably shouldn't come to MN right now, but if you must, here's some advice I just gave a friend:

DO NOT FUCK AROUND WITH THESE TEMPS. any exposed flesh will get frostbite in minutes.

you have not felt cold like this before. you do not know what to expect, and your clothes are inadequate. 🧵
Hi. MN getting a lot of attention right now.

Do NOT underestimate weather’s potential to absolutely BREAK people here, especially new-to-towners.

When it snows hard, drops to way below zero, everything frozen, it can make you stop functioning. Horrify and immobilize you. Changes EVERYTHING.
As of late morning, snow was falling in the Red River Valley with northerly winds gusting to more than 40 mph. Weather stations were reporting near-zero visibility at times.

Some additional notes:

* The cold will make your phone battery go dead much faster than it normally would. Plan accordingly. This is also true of electric car batteries.

* Really intense cold will impair you. Like, you will have trouble thinking. Your body will get stiff from the cold.

This was the 26th dedicated ICE air deportation flight to operate out of Minneapolis-St. Paul International since January 1, 2026.

We estimate they've deported 1,830 people on these flights - just over 100 per day, on average, so far this month.

Rest in peace Victor Manuel Diaz. He was a Latino immigrant kidnapped by ICE in Minneapolis. He died in ICE custody at Camp East Montana, Texas while facing deportation.

Minneapolis/Saint Paul neighborhoods are everything that people pretend small towns are. The local library has a “block party kit” you can take out to shut down your block. You walk to your local stores & you know the barista’s name. Neighbors take care of each other
Many Americans are terrible neighbors to each other, and that is why MN is striking everyone as extraordinary activism... when they are telling us that it is not. They're good neighbors!

It's no wonder that "being a shitty neighbor" is the hallmark of our domestic politics and our foreign policy.

That’s it. We’re neighbors looking out for our neighbors. We do it when we shovel each other’s walks and push each other out of snowdrifts and we do it when there are snatch squads roaming the streets. It runs deep in Minneapolis: we all have to band together to survive the winters.
