Dialectical Materialism 🤝 Dialectical Immaterialism
Reality is a progression of Moments and we're in the dumbest one yet
I just think every representative that votes to continue funding ICE should be tried by the ICC for their complicity in perpetuating crimes against humanity. Clearly our constitution means nothing and our justice system means even less.

on his day, I always read MLK's riverside church speech ("beyond vietnam"), which he gave exactly one year before he was killed... if only it didn't always feel so damn relevant. sigh.

Unsimplified: these are all the same insecurity expressed distinctly but consistently: Trump et al have an impossible expectation of masculinity that demands respect without resistance calibrated to a racialized patriarchy that no longer exists; Obama & the libs symbolize their intolerable failure
It sounds ludicrous and oversimplified if you're not a huge racist with a host of insecurities, but "Obama" is one of the key explanations for a lot of what Trump and Republicans do.

(Other similar explanations include "gender" and "to own the libs.")
fwiw i think his obsession with the nobel prize is entirely about obama getting it (setting aside whether or not obama ought to have received it)

The "ICE is using military tactics suited for a warzone, not for American streets" rhetoric kinda misses the point that warzones are not naturally occuring. The US military creates war zones from residential neighborhoods and the tactics are not more justifiable just because it's overseas

Great thread. It exposes the ambiguity of enlightenment thought that has allowed fascism to continually reassert itself. It raises the question that often makes "equality" an uncomfortable topic: *why* do we believe all humans should be treated as equals?" It turns out no truth is self-evident:
The history of modern political philosophy can be summed up like this: all humans were created equal, and so should be treated thusly. This is the proclaimed ideal. Then, in practice, an ever more nuanced web of exceptions has been spun, through which the universal human is defined ever narrower
the thing is, universal human rights are only universal if they include everyone, even the groups of people society has decided are less important (children, prisoners, people with names you can't pronounce, homeless people, the unemployed, disabled people who don't make good inspiration porn, etc)

Abstraction is not a way of escaping reality, but of understanding reality at a different scope. Our individual judgements of deservedness and selectivity are justified in the moment but create a broader system of denial & exclusion. Universal Justice requires Unity, and Unity requires Universalism!
what it comes down to is this: if human rights are something you have to deserve, then anyone - including you! - can be deemed undeserving.

and once you believe that, the only thing separating you from a fascist is a little bit of haggling over the price.

it’d be pretty cool if any of the people elected into positions of power that could possibly stop something like this would actually try to stop something like this
ABC News reporting 1,500 active duty soldiers are on standby to deploy to MINNESOTA.

The soldiers are from the 11th Airborne Division, based at Joint Base Elmendorf--Richardson, one of the Army's premier infantry formations.

The division is also the military's leading formation for Arctic warfare

Child abuse is a central plank in the conservative platform, because physical mastery of the weak is how they establish dominance, their only value. It's not just something a lot of conservatives do, it is part of being a conservative.
About the ICE agent who fatally shot a man on New Year’s Eve while off-duty:

A court document "says the ICE agent allegedly whipped his sons with a belt, made homophobic slurs and racist remarks about Black and Latino people and brought a gun to a youth sports game."

This is a great teaching example for why cross-national comparison matters in social science. People also make “bad choices” in peer countries, but they’re far less likely to end up homeless.
Positively shocked that the house magazine of the Manhattan Institute is upset that my book refuses to attribute America's record-high homelessness to "personal choices"—rather than, say, rents outpacing income gains by 325 percent since 1985.

I'm gonna say this with all the kindness in my heart: you aren't going to survive if you don't let your life have room for other things.

This is not a short term fight where we can just go 24/7 and then it will be over. We've got YEARS ahead of us. Take a break. Hydrate. Go bake something. Breathe.

I can't trust politicians who are anti-trans. Not because I'm "only searching for perfection" which is what centrists will be accusing me of for the rest of my life, it's because if you're not pro-trans you'll be garbage on lots of other issues too. Being anti-trans NEVER exists in a vacuum.

ICE raids are not the first time this was made explicit. I think people downplay how much Jim Crow was not just about controlling Black people but it was also about controlling white people. If you thought racism was dumb and acted that way you could end up with a bomb in your home
Just keep coming back to the fact that keeping people in a constant state of terror is a form of mass disablement and essential to the eugenic project that is the United States.

This kind of messaging is intended to drown moms in research, risk, and responsibility.

The goal is to keep them so anxious and so busy that they can't work for pay--especially not in high-powered "mens" jobs--or get involved in any kind of efforts to push for progressive change.

State investigators have been on the scene in North Minneapolis.

I know you’re angry. I’m angry. What Donald Trump wants is violence in the streets.

But Minnesota will remain an island of decency, of justice, of community, and of peace.

Don’t give him what he wants.
