Reminder again that until the 1960s we literally did not know what Mars looked like. You can't really resolve it well enough in a ground-based telescope to make out surface details.
We didn't think there were canals by the 1950s, but scientific consensus held that there was seasonal vegetation.

I'm above the age of 40, and the one piece of advice I would give to literally anyone starting out in life is, if you are in ANY doubt whatsoever how to respond to a situation, DO NOT SAY OR DO ANYTHING. Just wait, look, listen, and be chill. 99% of the time, you're better off.
It's still free to say nothing when you don't know what you are talking about - and it is the bargain of the century.
