The UCP is using the notwithstanding clause to dodge the Charter of Rights for five years because they know their law won’t hold up.

The UCP’s use of the NWS clause to end the teachers strike is sinking in. This is a terrible precedent for *all* groups with protected rights. Why would the government ever not use s 33 now in any case where they can’t make a credible s 1 argument?
"Bill 2 is perfectly legal."

"The kids need to go back to class."

I agree.

That doesn't mean the premier should've done an endrun around the legislature and the courts.

If the back-to-work law was defensible, why didn't she defend it before leaving the country?

The first (and until today only) time Alberta invoked the notwithstanding clause - in 1998
- the public outcry was so great that Premier Ralph Klein reversed his decision in less than 24 hours. FWIW.
The UCP government has invoked time allocation and on a bill removing Albertans' Charter rights.

And they're using the notwithstanding clause to do it.

Here's why that is a dangerous precedent. And why real conservatives need to stand up against it.

This abuse of power that puts all Charter rights at risk. Every Canadian should be watching closely and taking every action they can to stop further use of the Clause.

This is unprecedented and violates rights, overrides the courts, and puts everyone’s rights in danger.

Let's be clear about what happened today.

Premier Smith introduced a bill to strip Albertans of Charter rights,

denied MLAs the opportunity to debate it and the courts the ability to scrutinize it,

and did all of this from her seat on a jet to Saudi Arabia.

The Supreme Court has stated that Canadians have a Charter right to strike, and the Premier of Alberta just nullified that in order to end a teacher's strike that is entirely her fault.

I hope that the Premier reconsiders her desire to invoke the “notwithstanding clause” in dealing with Teachers.

This very rarely used clause, stripping Canadians of civil rights, has no place in collective bargaining.

General strike would be a commensurate response.
