I wrote this for the Edmonton Journal ten years ago. Thought it worth resharing today! Happy Boxing Day!! (Back then, the Journal had an SEO superstition that the word “Edmonton” had to appear in every single online headline, to appease the SEO gods. It was a quaint and credulous time, 2015.)

Every day, I get letters demanding that the federal govt or the GG or the LG “do something” to change or save Alberta. But the only people who can “fix” Alberta are Albertans. There is no magic constitutional genie. The responsibility is on all of us.
The UCP has made 2025 one of the darkest years for Alberta’s democracy.
Albertans can turn on the lights in 2026.

Yesterday, I rose to speak in support of the Indigenous Peoples Committee’s amendments to Bill S-2. These amendments would finally end the sex- and race-based discrimination the Indian Act continues to impose on First Nations women and their descendants.

After several hours of remarkable, thoughtful, passionate debate, the Senate has accepted the report on the Indigenous Affairs committee on S-2. Translation? The Senate accepted the recommendation to make major amendments to the bill, despite the wishes of the government. #cdnpoli #APPA #SenCa
