The short but unsatisfying answer to the question Dave poses is: it will take all of us.

I'm grateful to all the conservatives who stand up to the nonsense coming from separatist leaders. Because this isn't a partisan issue.

It's much bigger than that. daveberta.substack.com/p/whos-going...
Who’s going to stand up for Canada in Alberta’s separation referendum?
The time to stand up for a Strong Alberta within a Strong Canada is now.

Question period is broken.

:35s questions, :35s answers. Little substance.

For one session of Parliament, for 2 days a week, let's try longer Q&A:

2:00m questions, 2:00m answers.

We shape our rules then our rules shape us. Let's have rules that encourage thoughtful debate. youtu.be/U-Ha4Ijsjo8

iPolitics asked me to expand on my thoughts on question period reform - which I was happy to do.

1. Have longer exchanges
2. Set a roster for who's up
3. Stop the repetition
4. Experiment

This week, we talk about it as MPs. What changes would you make? www.ipolitics.ca/2026/02/02/c...
Canadians deserve a better question period
Our most visible accountability tool has drifted from its purpose. Parliament should use the Standing Orders debate to fix it.

This Friday, the House of Commons will be debating our Standing Orders.

I think this would be a great time to talk about whether Question Period is serving Canadians well as currently constructed (35 second questions, 35 second answers).

Here's some ideas: 🧵 (1/6)

With respect, Premier, we are not talking about what flavour of ice cream your colleagues prefer.

There's not much more fundamental to governing than the issue of separatism. To be indifferent to caucus positions on this is a dereliction of duty. www.ctvnews.ca/politics/art...
Smith says caucus members can sign any petition they want to, including on separation
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says members of her caucus can sign whatever petitions they want to, including one pushing for a referendum on the province’s independence from Canada.

Pleased to welcome the Conservative Party National Convention to Calgary this weekend!

Between sessions, I hope you enjoy our shops, restaurants, and the many charms of a city where 4/10 people voted Liberal last election.

Welcome to the heart of the new west. nationalpost.com/news/canada/...
Conservative convention kicks off in Calgary. Here's what to expect
It will feature the first federal Conservative leadership review since the party confirmed Stephen Harper, following a defeat in 2004.

These 51st state types represent a fringe opinion within a fringe movement. Albertans are rightfully bewildered by their claim to speak for us.

All elected officials in Alberta - federal and provincial - should clearly condemn their actions.

The PM's announcement today marks a big step towards affordability for all Canadians.

There's more work to be done on affordability but with inflation under control and wages growing, Canada's on the right track.

Scott, you’re talking to folk deeply outside the mainstream if someone’s telling you separatism/joining the US has support in Alberta.

As my elected Conservative colleagues can also tell you, Albertans are fiercely patriotic and support a united Canada. nationalnewswatch.com/2026/01/23/w...

Earlier today, the Prime Minister spoke in Davos of the need to avoid “the performance of sovereignty while accepting subordination" in international affairs.

This week I wrote about how I feel we need to strengthen sovereignty at home, too.

Wonderful connecting with Homespace and Highbanks last week. With Homespace providing affordable housing and wraparound supports and Highbanks empowering young moms fleeing adversity, these organizations are helping vulnerable Calgarians build stability, community, and hope.

Canada has the best deal on U.S. tariffs.

But forestry, auto, steel, aluminum are hit hard, and all tariffs are damaging. We're also the most exposed in the G7, with 71% of exports going to the U.S.

Our work: rapidly diversify markets while also maintaining the best possible deal.
