“Once you decide that a single vulnerable minority can be sacrificed, you’re operating within a fascist logic,” they said. “That means there might be a second one you’re willing to sacrifice and a third, a fourth. Then what happens?”
Abandoning trans people is 'fascist logic', says leading feminist philosopher
Leading feminist philosopher Judith Butler has declared that abandoning trans people or any minority is operating within 'fascist logic'.

3. Reinforcing rigid class distinctions
4. Destroying professions that have long been "feminized"

The core problem appears to be that the NYT decided to double down on "we must be perceived as objective" rather than "we must report the truth."

It's a losing game! The only way to be perceived as credible by the right is to amplify their lies and moral panics.
There is a certain pattern here:

-Gamed on WhiteWater
-Gamed on Iraq WMD
-Gamed on "but her emails"
-Bullied into dumping Public Editor
-Gamed on DEI etc by Rufo etc
-Gamed on this horrible latest piece, + rationalization.

Something seems really wrong at our most influential news institution.
The NYT's Zohran Mamdani hit piece crosses a line for me as a journalist. here's @lopatto.bsky.social's clear-eyed take on the genuine travesty of it all www.theverge.com/culture/7000...

The framing of the NYT article is incredibly reckless and irresponsible. This just isn't a summer travel issue. It's a lies-about-vaccines issue.

Culver City is 15 minutes from me. A friend of mine knows the family. This happened yesterday. Last I heard, they don't yet know his whereabouts.

There's more on their Go Fund Me page - thankfully almost funded after a day.

Andry José Hernández Romero, I remember you, even if I do not know how to articulate my horror, rage, & sorrow at your treatment by my government.

No one has heard from you in 102 days.

As vigil, I’m posting a photo (or video) of you every day until you are returned from El Salvador.

This is actually extremely common. The evangelical community is VERY dedicated to beating their children with paddles and various other objects in order to control and demand submission. They REGULARLY fight child abuse laws so they can continue this practice. And now they run the federal government

it’s partly this and it’s partly that all of these guys are totally ignorant of how the products that made them wealthy are downstream from the research these institutions produced at no cost to those businesses and are hostile to the suggestion
It’s stupid as hell but I think esp with the emergence of right-wing tech billionaire class (which happened quite suddenly—these people were “liberal coded” in the public imagination) has led to MAGA seeing “tech” (manly & good) as different from “science” (feminized & bad)
bsky.app/profile/saba...
I only have conjecture as to the “why” but I’d point to:
•longstanding underlying disdain for basic research & public grants
•recent emergence of right-wing tech-bro class standing in contrast & opposition to “scientists”
•COVID, the anti-vaxxers, and the lab leak conspiracy are the final catalyst

I think this is the right take. From outside of New York, I know it seems NYC is a hotbed of democratic liberalism. But actual New York politics are almost the reverse: the New York Democratic Party leadership is united mainly by trying to keep the left from power.
Really feel like the NYC mayor’s race shows that there is no such thing as a progressive establishment, and there is, in fact, an anti-progressive establishment that runs all the way from Murdoch to Clinton
Former President Bill Clinton is endorsing former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, his former HUD secretary, as the Democratic establishment tries to attempt to ensure Zohran Mamdani does not win the Democratic primary for NYC mayor. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/22/n...

There was a study published in Science just under 15 years ago that showed that rats in a lab were able to show empathy & altruism for one another.

When challenged, they would choose to free a captive buddy over food. Later in the tests, the liberating rat would save treats for the captive rat.
Tell me something cool you’ve learned about nature.

Hard not to believe that the current moment will not completely poison many people's ability to trust the US government for a long time. No-one really believes that the masked men dishing out the kind of violence will ever face any sort of accountability.
