“A nation beyond an ethnicity“
Birthright citizenship is probably not integral to liberal democracy, but it is integral to *American* liberal democracy. Our vision of what we are as a country, as a nation beyond an ethnicity, requires it.

Honestly, I think it was this bad! I have long been in the habit of buying groceries at low-traffic times as much as possible because of people like "guy utterly confused by purple cauliflower" and "woman who takes five minutes to choose milk while blocking it all."
Can't remember if it was this bad before COVID but I'm seeing an alarming spreading of what I'll call Airport Behavior to other public places. Obliviousness to other people's existence, ineptitude at navigating the environment. "Is this your first time at the grocery store" type stuff

He wants “more masculine leadership.”

Too many men have been raised to think that “leadership” means them, or those who look, think and act like them. They believe this is their moment to take back all the power and remake the nation and world into their images. So far, they are not failing.

Emily Oster also on my personal list here, especially after her egregious NYT article that downplayed the risks of drinking unpasteurized milk.
So, to all the "RFK's got some good ideas" folks (Rachael Bedard, Leana Wen) and Jay Bhattacharya is "an excellent choice for NIH" (Steven Macedo, Frances Lee) and Vinay Prasad "will bring a breath of fresh air to FDA" (Adam Cifu, John Mandrola) groupies--you own this now too.
I think the *speed* at which RFK Jr and his Great Barrington Declaration/anti-vaxx/Brownstone wrecking crew have been dismantling the US public health system has been really astonishing

And I don't say this casually. All these people made statements that even a year ago seemed unduly credulous, obviously wrong, or born out of misplaced personal loyalty. Some continue to double down on their comments, few would like to forget. I won't.

This is horrific and exactly what those of us in Black studies, gender studies, women’s studies have been warning our colleagues in the sciences about. Their seeming neutrality will not save them.
Heartbreaking. The University of Nebraska will terminate its entire Earth science department.

One of the country's most successful and respected geology & climate programs: gone.

When ideologues & politicians are threatened by the very act of studying climate change, I wonder: who of us is next?
It's over.

Despite the fact that the academic council recommended against it, despite the fact that the program brought in more tuition than it cost, and despite the fact that Nebraskans need & deserve this expertise, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences will be cut.

Well, Senators Bill Cassidy and Thom Tillis, you wanted RFK Jr. to “go wild” at HHS.

Congratulations. You’ve achieved your goal. He is well on his way to completely destroying the US vaccine program.

Assigned's mentions for this post are flooded with people who want to jeer at Biden so may I just say: When a Democratic former president makes a point of standing up for trans rights in a situation where he is absolutely not required to do so, for God's sake, just take the W.
6 Dec 2025 @rikiwilchins.bsky.social -- Biden, generally a lukewarm backer of trans rights as President, uses Intl International LGBTQ+ Leaders Conference speech to slam Reps/Trump for turning trans rights into "political football...into something scary, something sinister."

There are several academics, not Anthony, who jumped into this research area AFTER Trump issued his EO on birthright, had never/rarely written in the area. For what ends? To try to create a constitutional controversy where there is none. Framers' intent, text, doctrinal development are clear.
Anyone who knows this history should know there’s no contested issue.

My dad abhors any negative comments about immigrants. Asked him recently why he’s so strong on it: ‘Because we’re always happy to take the rich and clever ones. Which means it’s not about disliking immigrants. It’s about disliking the poor and vulnerable. And that’s a bad human instinct.’
This is so disgusting.

An aside about this: I muted Matt Y. a pretty long time ago on the other site - way back when he was still at Vox. And I did it because of a few of the comments he made during the period when Christine Blasey Ford's story was coming to light. They weren't *overtly* gross or sexist...
I continue to think that Matty coming out against birthright citizenship a few months ago should have been taken as a major warning sign that the group chats have already decided to surrender on this.

This is bleak.
My view is that the Reconstruction amendments, which outlawed slavery and its variants, are good and correct. And that true American liberalism is inseparable from the principle that every human born here is an equal citizen, as enshrined in our Constitution.

He is causing terror & violence, hurting our community & economy, for right-wing talking points.
Trump said last year that he would focus on deporting immigrants who were violent criminals. But a study of arrests in major operations in DC, LA, Illinois and Massachusetts shows that the vast majority of those swept up by ICE have no criminal record.

Honestly would vote for the lovely sixty-something lady who oversees the self-checkouts at one of my local stores long before I'd vote for Newsom for anything.
Gavin Newsom is an absolute freak who is obsessed with trans girls and homeless people. If he wants normality in his life he should start by having the personal maturity of the median grocery store cashier
California Governor Gavin Newsom said on Thursday that the Democratic Party needed to be “more culturally normal” and “less judgmental.”

Same, and given what we've seen from ICE and the desperation to hire ICE employees I am strongly suspicious that they are not using dogs that have gone through much training.

(FWIW: I am aware that police dogs have caused serious harm; I still think it's likely this is not using trained dogs)
I’m a little confused as to why ICE has or needs dogs tbh
My constituent, Wilmer, was mauled by an ICE attack dog despite the fact that, as he has consistently explained, he was not resisting arrest or trying to flee—his wife and young children, all U.S. citizens, were forced to watch helplessly as Wilmer was violently attacked and dragged away.
