Neo-romantic neo-Luddite social movements against a lonely, atomized, cold, calculating society are how we got RFK Jr laying waste to the greatest achievements of human civilization.
I read it (aspirationally) as a humanistic, neo-Luddite, neo-romantic response to an increasingly lonely, atomized, cold, and calculating society.

But that’s just me.

He literally repped the "AI" sex chatbot that told someone to kill themself. How in the world is that not relevant here.
i think the most jarring portion of this piece is how they try to do the TRUTH NUKE of “how can ed say he hates tech when he has long loved it?” like do pro-ai people think we want to hate computer? do they really think we are luddites?

there are few human rights issues more consequential for the future than the basic right to control what software you run on devices that you own.

our endless debates about content moderation and algorithms promoting bad crap could look pretty quaint in the near (authoritarian) future

This is huge news!
UBC has developed an enzyme that can convert donor organs to type O, making them universal.
Normally a using organs of the wrong blood type causes the recipient's immune system to attack the organ, leading to failure.

i've never met someone who says "we should be spending money on solving earth's problems not on space cowboys", who also knows what we spend money on in the space industry

i'm convinced that it's impossible to hold that view while also having that knowledge

This is heinous, unforgivable behavior. This is systemic child abuse. This is flagrant disregard for children's humanity and fundamental rights. It is a policy that reveals the thoroughgoing moral depravity of its authors.
Shelters that house unaccompanied minors are bracing for "Freaky Friday," the start of an ICE operation that will first issue letters to children, seeking to pressure them to return to the countries they've fled in exchange for a cash payment. If they decline, their parents will be targeted by ICE.

Imma be real with you guys the "TESCREAL" stuff is basically the libleft version of rightist paranoia over "Cultural Marxism", where you just smash together a half-dozen things that annoy you and go "these things are all connected and being pushed by a nefarious secret cabal of my political enemies"

She basically invented astrophysics.
She proved the laws of chemistry, quantum mechanics, and statistical mechanics, not just gravity, applied universally.
She determined the composition of the sun and primacy of hydrogen in the universe.
She advised the PhDs of Frank Drake and Frank Kameny.
Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin ✨ figured out what stars are made of ✨ when she was just 25. 🔭🧪

Her PhD thesis basically established the Harvard astro department — at a time when Harvard didn't officially allow woman students.

I wrote this little profile to mark the 100th anniversary of her thesis:

If we follow your science fiction fantasies and get rid of the Black Death and Smallpox, extending average lifespans by a decade, living longer than Nature And God Intended, then this will only empower the feudal lords and cheapen life.
No, I DON'T believe in hyper AI robot god immortality, but we could, perhaps, exist a lot longer, even a LOT lot longer, and that would be good. It would not inevitably create billionaire gods who rule over us as like unto ants or cause everybody to forget "the meaning of life"

This applies to damn near everything going on right now from more normie comedy late night shows being pulled off the air because the host said something that triggered some authoritarian conservative snowflakes, to attempts by payment processors to censor everything not squeaky clean and SFW.
Becoming increasingly clear we’re gonna have to build a parallel infrastructure for all the media we really love. The reason all of this is happening under the color of law is hyperconsolidation, dissent being traded straight up for merger approval, or fear of harassment.
