NEW: A federal judge in Minnesota orders Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons to appear IN PERSON this Friday and explain why he shouldn't be held in contempt.

"The court's patience is at an end," writes Bush-appointed Judge Patrick J Schiltz, who clerked for Scalia. www.documentcloud.org/documents/26...

Cacho's Social Death remains so relevant. In it, she explains how our national identity is grounded in the idea that some people are ineligible for personhood. There are valued citizens (Renee Good, Alex Pretti). And there are people who lack human value (Keith Porter, Silverio Villegas Gonzalez).

Todd Blanche spent 20 minutes on Meet the Press explaining the operation ICE was carrying out in when its agents killed Alex Pretti.

This wasn’t an ICE operation. ICE agents didn’t kill Pretti: BP killed Pretti. It’s baffling that the deputy attorney general doesn’t seem to know the difference.

16-year-old José Rodríguez was walking down a street in Mexico in 2012 when U.S. Border Patrol agent Lonnie Swartz shot at him 16 times. Rodríguez’s body was riddled with ten bullets, eight in his back.

Swartz, who claimed the child threw rocks across the border wall, was acquitted of murder.

Border Patrol applicants train at a New Mexico academy for six intense months. CBP agents have killed more than 70 people since 2010.

(ICE is a completely different agency. The way Hicks conflates the two should help readers evaluate whether he’s minimally qualified to make policy recommendations.)
Jumping in here to point out that most police departments have training that is far more rigorous and rates of use of force that are far far lower than ICE and the CPB. This *isn’t* policing. IMO: It would behoove if folks didn’t conflate them.

Additionally: Immigration and Customs Enforcement is a different agency, which shouldn’t be used interchangeably.
Customs and Border Protection is an agency.
Border Patrol is an agency, within that agency.

"Customs and Border Patrol" does not exist.

Worth noting that one reason you’re benefitting so fully from the Star-Tribune’s timely, extensive coverage of unfolding events is that it’s a metro newspaper that hasn’t been systematically starved to further enrich shareholders and executives.

I think it’s weird that news agencies aren’t reporting that, on video, it appears an agent took a gun from (or near) Pretti’s person before he was shot and killed.

My worry is that many of us have lost our ability to see things for what they are.

What is “an immigration problem”
All of this is fucking senseless. Minnesota did not have an immigration problem. Trump sent his Nazi thugs here because he's racist against Somali people and to own libs like Tim Walz. Now two Minnesotans are dead and Minneapolis is on the verge of going up in flames. None. Of. This. Was. Necessary.

I did watch the video. It appears an agent takes a gun from the victim and scurries off. Then, while the victim is unarmed and on his knees, a different agent shoots him. Then, while the victim is still unarmed, injured, and laid out on the ground, he’s shot over and over again.

Removing AI from my personal email account is one of the best decisions I've ever made. It inspired me to rethink the purpose of email. I cleaned up my account, archived what I don't need at hand. At the moment, my inbox has seven emails; two are marked unread because I owe the sender a response.
I removed all AI features from my email account. This means all messages that were previously filtered into social and promotion tabs now go to my primary box. I've been unsubscribing to dozens of useless emails and newsletters, many which I never singed up for. 10/10, highly recommend.

Injustice Watch is hiring an EIC!

This is a great opportunity for someone who knows how to lead a team and has a clear vision for what great investigative reporting looks like. You'll have editorial autonomy to shape the direction and assemble the team.

Heard NPR’s correspondent, who is not in Venezuela, explain that people in Venezuela woke up to this news. Yet everyone I’ve heard from was up all night.

Intense observation on what the U.S. state is and isn’t doing requires critical attention to what the U.S. press is and isn’t doing, too.

I mapped it out and Bannon’s mansion is an eight-minute drive to Chomsky’s three-acre ranch. It would be shorter but you have to drive around the country club that divides the streets there.
