Very disappointed to hear that people who use the phrase "class traitors" have forgotten that libraries exist.
Just saw someone claim that authors who want to be paid for their work are "class traitors" because we "only let the wealthy" read our books, and I think I need to go into the woods to scream into the night for a bit.

It's $5, not your first-born child! I need that $5 for health insurance!

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Wow, this looks incredible!

(*Someday* I hope to be able to visit the US again and apply to amazing programs like this.)
We are absolutely thrilled to announce the 2026 Clarion Workshop instructor line-up!! Applications open on Dec. 1st, so spread the word and mark your calendars. It's going to be another stellar summer here in San Diego.

Now I need to find a Vancouver shop that carries these!

(I think I saw some at Upstart & Crow last year so it might be worth a trip to Granville Island.)
35. Lady Ferry by Sarah Orne Jewett via @biblioasis.bsky.social

A young girl sent to live with her aunt and uncle while her parents travel abroad comes face-to-face with a family legend —- a woman who may be immortal, or who may be mad. A sweet, melancholy story about the power of myth and death.

Must we call it “skepticism?” If I say the sun revolves around the Earth, would you call me “skeptical” about heliocentrism?
A CDC website that previously said vaccines do not cause autism has walked back that statement. It now repeats the skepticism that Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has voiced about the safety of vaccines.
C.D.C. Website No Longer Rejects Possible Link Between Autism and Vaccines
A previous version denied a link between vaccines and autism. It now echoes the doubts about that conclusion voiced by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

I did the same thing at work, where I’m forced to use Word. (Fortunately no one makes me use it for my own writing so I don’t have it at home.)

Writers don’t want a huge annoying sloppy Clippy tripping us up at every step. It’s gross and infuriating.
Why yes, @microsoft.com, I will HAPPILY provide you feedback on how exactly I feel about Word right now.

Well, this is quite lovely.
One of the most transformative moments I had as a writer was listening to a podcast years ago in which the editor in chief of Smokelong, Christopher Allen, talked about the day the guy who'd submitted 152 times to Smokelong had his piece accepted and how the whole staff celebrated. Suddenly (1/??)
We're rooting for you!

“Life without art is not life.”

I want a Netflix series on this whole family - how they live and how they walk around in the world. They sound like people we would all get great value from knowing.

#TWSOchat A4.

Not a group, but it really helps to have writer friends for meetups and online conversations.

So much of writing is rejection -- so a lot of what we do is cheer each other on. (And we are all writing different kinds of things so it doesn't make sense to be competitive anyhow.)
Q4. Writing at times can seem competitve or it can seem like there are limited opportunities to some people. Do you have a group of writer friends or a crit group where you share call outs, residencies and other opportunities with your writer colleagues? #TWSOchat

I think a lot about the story Carl Reiner told: he’d have been a sewing machine repairman if not for a free WPA drama class. That led to other theater work, to Sid Caesar, to Mel Brooks, and all the rest. All because of one free class paid for by a government that felt the arts were worth teaching.
you ever think about the works progress administration? I sure do. I wish that was a thing now. I would be so glad to contribute my labor to like. A random ass local bridge

I have been mostly working on novel revisions lately and not submitting much, so it’s been a while since I’ve got a rejection, but here we are — the first one since July, I think!
