THE RUNNING MAN is a perfectly smooth blockbuster. Frictionless and anonymous. It’s like King’s bite and Wright’s comic sensibilities canceled each other out.

It’s the same old same old. Republicans do a tantrum and break the dishes. The Democrats clean it up. It’s an abusive relationship.

This sounds much better than a V for Vendetta series.

Yeah, man. You’ve got ‘em right where you want them. 🙄
Do I trust them? No. That’s why I voted no. But they are in a terrible position, and we can use the next few weeks to turn the pressure up even further.

Once again, Democratic politicians are upset not at the President or congressional Republicans, but their own voters.

The thing about the "I voted against this" position Schumer is taking is that either he is trying to mislead Dem voters by implying he didn't support reopening right now, or he has no control over his caucus.

The worst part of the cave gang’s protestations that the shutdown wasn’t working to achieve their goals, aside from being horrible messaging, is that it _was_ working, if you understand politics to be entirely about building leverage and applying pressure to 🧵

Now that the subsidies are gone, I genuinely have to ask: what remains of the ACA? Even though Republicans were never able to repeal it, it seems like they've chipped away at it so thoroughly in the last nine years that little remains.

i think this is key. taking the deal would amount to taking the blame. it would turn a clear political victory into an unambiguous defeat.
If the Dems blink after all of this, for a deal that all but ensures no ACA subsidies in 2026 anyway, then what was the purpose of letting the shutdown go for 40 days in the first place?

I'm going to give up on American politics completely if the Dems open the government by selling out the ACA. Voters could not have been clearer last week. They want people to fight for us, not collaborate and surrender. Every single D who votes for this is a coward.

Democrats have to stop bailing out Republicans from facing the consequences of their own policies. And yeah, that means they have to stop sparing voters from experiencing what GOP government truly means.
Every time Dems step in, it only emboldens the GOP & they make it even worse the next time.
Every time Dems step in, it only emboldens the GOP & they make it even worse the next time.
So Democrats get:
1. A CR that will prevent the GOP from facing the wrath of Americans for a shutdown over the holidays
2. A coupon for one (1) meaningless ACA vote that will fail
3. An end to the illegal RIF/SNAP moves that are already before the courts
Those all seem like wins for the GOP.

In terms of a bigger picture, why would anyone vote for a Democrat again when they only exist to cave and can’t even back their biggest legislative accomplishment of the last 25 years?

If you have a Dem senator and you're seeing this right now, CALL THEM RIGHT NOW and tell them NO. If you don't know anyone who would be affected by this, call them for my friend Lisa. She cannot afford insurance without ACA subsidies and without health insurance I'm terrified she will die.
! A key group of Senate Democrats is leaning toward voting for a deal to end the shutdown, provided final details can be worked out like worker protections (Gift link)
(Deal does NOT include an ACA extension.)

Yes. How do Dem electeds not understand this dynamic? After all these years?
At some point we have to let pain hurt Trump instead of helping him. Every time we let pain help him, he’ll do more and bigger next time.
Each acquiescence means the next one will be *more* painful.

Dems backed Trump into a corner where he’s advocating for starving Americans and hemorrhaging support. If they vote to let him off the hook in exchange for nothing it’s a cataclysmic failure. I know people are in pain but insulating Republicans from political consequences is not the answer.
