The one thing the useless incompetent Boris Johnson clung on to for his failed premiership was the UK’s Covid response. Turns out he killed 20,000 people.

Exactly this

See people saying "Scientists need to rebuild trust" and my reaction is invariably "Ex-fucking-SCUSE me?!?"

Countless influential powers keep metaphorically urinating all over scientists and then we get told "You guys need to stop stinking of piss if you want to be taken seriously"??
I really hate it when scientists keep saying that “we need to rebuild trust in science,” because it implies that scientists are to blame for the mistrust rather than the millions of dollars of dark money that have funded political attacks on science in order to advance a far right agenda.

To lose one councillor may be regarded as misfortune. To lose *counts on fingers* 43 looks like raging fucking incompetence (with apologies to Oscar Wilde).
And that's their 43rd councillor to be suspended or quit this year....

"A senior Reform UK figure in Lancashire has been suspended by the party after posting in a far-right Whatsapp group calling for expelled hardline anti-immigrant MP Rupert Lowe to lead the party and saying Reform is deliberately downplaying its immigration policy to be palatable to the public."

I hate how every nation is living down to its stereotype because I’m trained to look for complexity in things, yet the USA is run by a caricature of crony capitalism that Soviet propaganda would consider too unsubtle, Russia is run by a Bond villain, the UK is speedrunning Children of Men, etc.

The main attraction of the UK to asylum seekers is that if they have a second language is quite likely to be English, and because they often have existing diasporic family/friend connections there. These are actually *advantages* the UK possesses as a a desirable place if it could only see that.
The UK isn’t a “soft touch” on asylum.

UK asylum seeker benefits are similar to European neighbours

No right to work before 12 months (it’s 6 months in France, Spain, Belgium, Netherlands)

UK settlement after 5 years (it’s 3 or 4 in Germany)

Let’s cut out the alarmist rhetoric.

I lost a job for calling Charlie Kirk a Nazi, but this is cool.
Trump suggests Khashoggi had it coming: "You're mentioning someone that was extremely controversial. A lot of people didn't like that gentleman that you're talking about. Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happen. But he knew nothing about it. You don't have to embarrass our guest."

The witch made him hot chocolate.

"They say I'm strong," he said. "And I am."

He took a sip.

"They say I can overcome any hardship."

"Mm," said the witch.

"And I can. I do."

The witch said nothing.

"But I shouldn't have to!"

"No."

The witch held the hero as he wept.

"No, you shouldn't."

Remember, always, that the post-Brexit-vote Tory government, and specifically Home Secretary Sajid Javid, deliberately and with malice aforethought reduced to almost zero the timely processing of asylum claims in the UK. They literally created the "overwhelming backlog" that traps people in hotels.
