like the surprising thing here is that 'russiagate' and 'the epstein files' are literally the same thing, not that the former was true lol.

The rich do not believe they should be held accountable for anything. It's up to us to do something about it.
"Convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein" is a phrase that first appeared in newspapers in March 2011 and appeared regularly from that point onward. it is INCONCEIVABLE to me that this many people were still associating with him!!

Exactly. These emails are from the Epstein estate, not the DOJ.

This is also what the email senders and recipients felt comfortable enough discussing to put in writing.
This isn’t even the stuff they’re trying to actually stop from getting out.

as i keep saying i now 100% believe everything ancient historians wrote and can't do that "it was just a poetic allusion" or "it combined different figures together" bullshit
America has long feared it would suffer the same fate as the Roman republic, but never quite truly appreciated how utterly absurd Roman elites had become by the time of the late republic.

the legislative history is utterly forgotten. We got the aca because of a republican senator switching parties and an unexpected death that gave dems an extremely narrow super majority for liek 60 days in session. It passed on New Year’s Eve quite literally the very last moment it could have passed
If we had been able to pass something better, that would have been better

I was there, Gandalf! We tried!

If we had been able to pass nothing, that would have been much, MUCH worse

i cannot get over how quickly this is happening. the decline of the other two branches/ascent of the lawless executive is outpacing actual democratic decline, which is usually what precipitates executive consolidation. but in our case, the other two branches are collaborators
We are living through the most consequential shift in the constitutional government of the United States in over a hundred and fifty years and nobody seems to have even noticed yet.
Congress no longer holds the power of the purse, the executive can just do whatever they want with federal monies

After the Peloponnesian War - I promise this is relevant - Sparta installed an oligarchic puppet government, the Thirty Tyrants, in Athens.

What rapidly became clear was that Athenian democratic habits were so deeply rooted that tremendous violence would be necessary to remove them.

We have armed secret police kidnapping people off the street based on the color of their skin.

When we win: we will haul them before a Senate committee. The masks will come off. There will be consequences.

By contrast, JB Pritzker told me that people should flood the No Kings protests precisely in order to let the American people know that something is deeply amiss.

More Dems should be doing this, to send the message widely that we are in real trouble right now.

We live in a country where the government honors insurrectionists who sacked the Capitol, and defines peaceful protest, even before it occurs, to be terrorism.
They know their position is weak, they know they are unpopular, which is why they are seeking to stamp out dissent.
Mike Johnson: "We're so angry about it. I mean, I'm a very patient guy, but I've had it with these people. The theory we have right now -- they have a hate America rally that's scheduled for October 18 on the National Mall. It's the pro-Hamas wing and antifa people ... "

Lot of people confidently missing the point in the replies to this: if every cent of Elon musks net wealth was liquid, which it isn’t, that’s not even enough money to run the govt for two weeks. The problem less that they have money, and more how they use that money in destabilizing ways.
“The problem with billionaires isn’t that they’re hoarding money that would otherwise pay for a Scandinavian social utopia. It’s that their money has become a source of wildly distorted political power that allows a few men with extremist views to wreak havoc on the rest of us.”

It's so funny that people copy this, given that DOGE was basically the least effective domestic US policy initiative of all time.
News: Bari Weiss just sent a memo to staffers at CBS News asking them to produce a memo explaining "how you spend your working hours—and ideally, what you've made (or are making) that you're most proud of."

One CBS News staffer puts it like this to me: "We just got Elon Musked."

Worth a friendly reminder that the next set of nation-wide No Kings protests are set for October 18th.

There's probably one in your area.

I am not generally a crowds or protests sort of person, but there's one in my town and I'll be at it on the 18th.
