A ridiculous lawsuit filed by Project Veritas vs the NY Times is now a dead letter. Among other things, it had spurred a local NY judge to try to inflict prior restraint on the Times. ... which an appellate court smacked down right away

What's more, AI images are the product of algorithmic populism, optimized to cater to the aesthetic and ideological preferences of a very narrow mostly white, male and very online demographic, as is documented in this fantastic report by @christobuschek.net & @jerthorp.bsky.social

Raymond Chandler, letter to a friend, January 1948. Seems relevant beyond the specific Hollywood context.

I am sorry to say it, but this is probably one of the most important things you can repost today.
Certainly worth repeating in the times we are in..

I am so not at home for the "Oooh, this was just performative" sneering. You cynical humps of self-congratulation, the fucking Trumpists are performative ALL THE TIME. They set a vibe! Their vibe is "there is no law and we can break everything." God DAMN do we need a resounding counter-vibe.

Alright, this is fairly inconsequential... but I may have just spotted some plagiarism (possibly accidental) from a former judge from the 5th Circuit.

So to start, I was googling "Willy Wonka legal trouble" — as one does — and I found this humor piece by John G. Browning, located here:

Totally agree with this. Flying a person to a third country that they may never have been to, directly into a prison where they are going to be forced to do hard labor, is not a deportation; it's something else entirely.
@washingtonpost.com They were not DEPORTED. Deported means sending them back to their country of origin. These people were sent to a maximum security prison in El Salvador, without any due process or any analysis as to whether they feared harm in El Salvador!
In America, EVERYONE has a RIGHT to due process - regardless of immigration status. It’s fundamental to our Constitution.

Deporting hundreds of people in secret by invoking a wartime proclamation is a blatant abuse of power by President Trump.

People need to be crystal clear about something: The requirement that the government ANSWER to a court on the legal basis for detaining someone is literally the core liberty right (habeas corpus). If the government says they don’t have to do that bc “national security,” YOU can be disappeared.

And arrogant.
Ive never encountered a class of people so convinced that they and they alone have the answers to everything, no matter what the subject in question is--from higher education to medicine to art and literature. They might have no training or skill in it, but are convinced they know best
Years ago, after the Cambridge Analytica scandal, I interviewed a former fb employee, and I remember her continually emphasizing that these tech bros weren't evil geniuses, but were, in fact, dangerous because they were utterly clueless, totally reckless, and had too much power.

I cannot, during these horrific times, recommend enough the importance of making pockets of time to just do things that are not related to anything but the joy of being alive and playing. You need it. You do. It will keep you whole. Which we need. We need you whole.
