As on the other site, I'm going to collect my longer threads about AI image synthesis and »platform realism« in one meta-thread, mainly to keep an overview for myself. So this is where we start ...

With each update, tools like Midjourney promise us more »realistic« representations – but the »reality« these images represent has often little to do with the one we live in. Rather, they are best described as »Platform Realism,« a second-order aesthetic of generic images. A thread ...

«Venezuela has been commandeered by a group of criminals masquerading as a government.» I wonder if there are any other countries in the Western Hemisphere of which you could say the same?
In @nytopinion.nytimes.com

“If, as the Trump administration has laid out in its new National Security Strategy, there is to be a renewed focus in the Western Hemisphere, then restoring democracy in Venezuela must be a top priority,” Jimmy Story, a retired U.S. ambassador to Venezuela, writes.
Opinion | This May Be Our Last Chance to Get It Right in Venezuela
For the past decade, every administration in Washington has said Venezuela represents an extraordinary threat to the United States.

Having watched the great final episode #Pluribus, I'm more convinced than ever that the true horror of «the joining» isn't forced collectivity, but the loss of any appreciation for what is unique and specific. In this respect, the hive mind isn't only a metaphor for AI, but for capitalism in general

People say LOTR isn’t a heavyhanded allegory, but that’s harder to argue these days given its villain is a discarnate intelligence seeking data on everyone while consuming all resources, corrupting everyone and turning the world grey

An academic of my generation would have send Gandalf away for max. 3 years, because that’s how long academics can plan these days.

#academicchatter
You can tell that LotR was written by an academic because Gandalf disappears for like 20 years doing research to answer a single question.

When media policy meets military: Is Palantir a Swiss military technology company?

Great piece by @republik.ch, financially supported by @journafonds.bsky.social and globally distributed by Swissinfo, the SRG's international offer that government plans to defund.

Why Palantir is becoming a risky bet for Switzerland
Zurich serves as a hub for US tech company Palantir’s business relations. The Swiss foreign ministry now has the company in its sights, because of its controversial role in Gaza.
