Columbo is the best
Watching Columbo for the first time and as someone with a working class chip on his shoulder, seeing all these smug, monied elitists sneeringly underestimating and then being utterly destroyed by a shabby, brilliant little guy is absolutely cathartic.

Society is a construct. You can just ask someone to do a ska cover of Faith of the Heart and they'll say "$300 please" and you give it to them and then you have it.

Everyone, give

I think it's underrated how good a writer Darwin was.
Charles Darwin briefly discussed dogs’ senses of humor in the 2nd edition of ‘The Descent of Man’ 👇 and then fleshed those ideas out further in ‘The Expression of Emotion in Man and Animals’

precisely my thought. the president and his dumbass republican allies put these men and women into harm’s way for a political stunt and look what has happened
Whether this was random street crime or targeted political violence, I think it was bad for the president to unnecessarily put the National Guard in harm’s way like this. They simply don’t need to be there.

America's Test Kitchen has been my go-to for years now! The recipe developers do lots of science (which you can read if you like or skip right to the recipe) and they include photos and illustrations which are really helpful. They help me understand not just what to do but why to do it.
I have developed zero recipes for NYTimes Cooking, and more than 100 for ATK, this is correct
My public service announcement for today is that America’s Test Kitchen, which is infinitely better then NYTimes Cooking, has introduced a new gift link option that has no limit on how many you can share and each link lasts 30 days.

My ex's family made aggressively Southern sides for Thanksgiving because they were originally from Louisiana, but on Christmas Day they invariably filled a slow cooker with Chicago-style Italian Beef and had sandwiches all day.
it fascinates me how most everyone in the U.S. does turkey for Thanksgiving, but we are all over the map as to what we eat for Christmas (as is proper for a hugely diverse nation).

I come from a Christmas prime rib roast family, myself.
I also use the bacon method. Although turkey is Christmas dinner where I come from.

In 1924, Calvin Coolidge's 16-yr-old son played tennis on the White House grounds w/o wearing socks. He got a blister and was dead from infection a week later.

This is unthinkable today—which is why I wrote this series. Cuz the systems that save us from this kind of fate are in urgent need of care.
For a yr, I've been working on a series for The New Atlantis about the vast systems that underlie our lives. Our ancestors built them up over decades to fend off hunger, thirst, darkness and disease. But too few of us know about them—and they're all at risk. The conclusion is now available online:
Why We Are Better Off Than a Century Ago
Our ancestors built grand public systems to conquer hunger, thirst, darkness, and squalor. That progress can be lost if we forget it.

Sometimes a little piece of terrible writing gets stuck in my mind.

Everyone was focused on how awful that “100 Greatest Comedies” list was. They were right. It was awful.

I’m stuck on the writer referring to Cleavon Little as a “scene stealer” in BLAZING SADDLES.

He’s the star of the movie.

I wonder how many times a week Trump gathers his cabinet to ask where they're at on a "Freejack" scenario, where they load his consciousness into the body of a much-younger Emilio Estevez.
At his personal urging, Donald Trump’s benefactors confirm that they are looking into “making it the late 1980s again”

Hey, uh, Nintendo: Donald Trump says he wants a sequel to the 2002 GameCube game "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem." No need to check, he's very busy, but he definitely said it.
‘Rush Hour 4’ is officially in the works.

This comes after Donald Trump personally requested Paramount to revive the franchise.

The best thing I learned from Macaulay Culkin at last night’s Home Alone screening is that his 4yo son loves the movie, thinks of himself as Kevin, and has no idea that that’s his dad. Culkin is attempting to hide that fact for as long as possible

Sean Duffy doesn't have to take off his belt, take his laptop out of the bag, get yelled at, spend three hours at a layover in Atlanta, or wedge himself into a 14"-wide seat. He flies in government-owned private jets on his own schedule and is mocking you for trying to be comfortable.
Trump's secretary of transportation Sean Duffy is scolding Americans to "dress professionally" for holiday travel at airports and such.

Democratic lawmakers, this is said in love: if you're not mocking these assholes relentlessly over this, then what are we even doing here?
