MAKE ME BETTER is my forthcoming novel about the horrors of community. It is about cults, wellness, control, and the things we will do to escape grief.
Sometimes it hurts to grow -- but your community believes that you can be made pure.
It comes out in May.

Sometimes I wonder if our many years of jokes about writers hating writing and doing anything but writing, etc, have convinced people that the writing part is the hurdle and the goal is just to have a thing in hand. But I am here to tell you: the writing is the best part. The act is the thing.

Do I get my best ideas while I'm doing chores because my brain is in neutral and the thoughts flow freely, or is it because I wrote my first couple of novels while working retail and conditioned myself to create inner amusement during shifts?
I guess we'll never know.

I must’ve been a postdoc at MIT or a new-ish engineering professor when I first heard the story of how Ben Barre overheard colleagues talking about how his research was so much better than his ‘sister’ Barbara’s.
We're disappointed to see Ben Barres's powerful book "The Autobiography of a Transgender Scientist" among the ~400 titles removed from the Naval Academy Library. Needless to say, we're proud to have published his book and will keep it — and his memory — alive.

Do the locked plexiglass cases where they keep the deodorant also smile?
Do the self-checkout lanes they put in to avoid paying people also wave?
Target's never coming back.

"Store employees are now required to smile if they are within 10 feet of a shopper.
They also must make eye contact with and wave to or greet the customer.
If they’re within four feet, the employee should ask how the customer’s day is going or if they need help."
🙄 Won't stop the boycott, y'all.
