So, I got the limited edition sparkly Black Honey lipstick. And inside the box there was a translation error so fundamental that I wasn't sure what I was seeing at first.

"Tear" in English: verb, to rip
"Lacrymal" in French: adjective, pertaining to tears as in tear ducts/lachrymal ducts

Finally, stacking adjectives. Slop often stacks three, such as "your work is trenchant, memorable, and profound." Though it's not exactly that here, the thick layer at the end: "subtle," and "thematically aligned" is not how a real person closes a sale.

I am not one to cede the em dash, but I am becoming wary of it. There it is, doing its thing. Also, you can tell this is a mad-libs piece of work. Why would award-winning authors need help? It's because the sentence usually says "emerging" or "underappreciated." The sentence isn't tailored to it.

These suggested cross-categories are usually subgenres in which your book is cross-listed on Amazon or other sites, but they can sound like market analysis if you don't know that. Read your subcategories. They may surprise you! I did not think I was writing prepper lit, but eye of the beholder.

Hey fellow authors! I got another one of these spam emails about book promo written by AI. I wanted to point out some of the obvious tells in case you're not sure if it's always detectable. Good news: it is!

I found out about it AFTER it got nominated for the LeGuin, but this is a quietly incredible book. Non-linear narrative with bold formal choices. Alternate histories, fascinating futures including the relationships people form with AI. Gorgeous style and a really different approach to sci-fi.

My friend @bydonmartin.bsky.social got his debut YA novel, Verity Vox and the Curse of Foxfire, into the top 7 books about teenage witches and wizards.

The top of this list has turned into something of a… turf war. And I’m so pleased to see some turf disturbed.
