Saying that the Tories’ immigration policy was “an experiment in open borders” makes you what, a real serious person I guess. Somebody with a good understanding of the situation, not prone to bullshitting and so forth.
Saying that a country needs rules, norms and shared values to be united rather than a collection of strangers really does not make you Enoch Powell.

It is completely absurd and horrific and enraging that Starmer will mimic Enoch Powell in politics as well as heading and his weird little fan club are just like NO HE DID NOT

At some point you lot might even consider the possibility that we're people too
In the spirit of @stephenkb.bsky.social ‘s image of public opinion on immigration as “I want a pony in my flat with no costs attached” public opinion on social care seems to be “I want a magical care machine that costs nothing”
So idk, my take is either you change the funding model (ummm, raise taxes, I mean raise taxes), or you accept lower standards of care, or you accept immigration propping up a sector most people would not wish to work in in a million years. Your choice, really.

Never mind the policies, the language Starmer uses - about human beings who want to do nothing worse than work, study, live with their families or seek refuge here - is simply appalling
NEW: Keir Starmer says he wants to close a “squalid chapter” in our country’s history as he sets out measures to reduce immigration.

Starmer says between 2019-2023 while Tories were “telling people with a straight face that they would get net migration down”, it quadrupled.

Roughly 170,000 people are already on the existing ten-year-routes, so let's not pretend they don't exist. Coupled with visa fees 7-10 times the actual processing costs, they are already shown to drive many people into destitution, and lead to higher levels of people becoming undocumented. 4/

Btw, the 10 year route to citizenship (which isn’t a 10 year route, it’s 10 years plus a year on ILR lol) has already existed and anyone on a student visa has been pushed onto that route more or less.

My decade is (mercifully) almost up but it’s been absolutely brutal.
One of the sickest things about this is that it was already an uphill battle for most immigrants to “earn the right to live” here, made more difficult depending on certain factors.

So, sorry, former int'l law attorney here, it's a basic rule of international law and the ICJ that you can command protection of the rights of individuals or states but you cannot define the remedy.

Because every state has a different court system/different govt system.

There are no universities left in Gaza, and we're still waiting for Western universities to even acknowledge this, much less call for a boycott.

Less than three months after Israel pretended to be outraged that we would say it attacked a hospital, the IDF is attacking the last fully functional hospital in Gaza. Three month ago, there were 36.

More Palestinians have been killed and displaced in the current Gaza war than in the 1948 Nakba.

In the Nakba, around 750,000 Palestinians were displaced and 15,000 killed. Today, the death toll in Gaza and the West Bank already exceeds 15,000, with 1.7 million displaced - and the war is not over.
