Some are suggesting you deliberately write inaccurate or confusing alt text, because they say this confuses AI scrapers that are analyzing images.

The purpose of alt text is to help people who cannot see the image. Deliberately misrepresenting the image is a gross misuse of alt text. Don't do it.

We are now further away from the theatrical release of Raiders of the Lost Ark (June 12, 1981) than it was from the year it takes place in (1936). We have reached the Indiana Jones event horizon.

I'm old.

If you're not, listen to this.

Get a guitar or some drums, or a trumpet. Pick up a brush, a pencil, some clay or a welder.

Just make shit. It doesn't have to be good (eventually it will be) just make music, art or write or whatever.

It's literally never been more important.

The more you utilize the library, for literally any thing, the more they get to point at usage statistics and go "see, give us more money"
AND supporting your local library is super important! If you actually DO want books to be available to everyone, the library *already exists* and is staffed by the people who are deep in the trenches of fighting censorship! Supporting the library is doing actual good for your community!

Australia recorded ZERO cases of cervical cancer in women under 25 for the first time since they started tracking the cancer in the 80s.

This is the power of vaccines.

The HPV vaccine is extremely effective at preventing cancer.

Viruses can be oncogenic. Get your vaccines and protect yourself!
newsGP - Australia set for world-first cervical cancer elimination
Vaccination programs have played a key role, and GPs remain ‘instrumental’ in boosting screening rates to reach the 2035 target.

nuzzi / lizza misconduct imo enabled the destruction of so much public health & scientific research — and a resurgence in measles in the US. this is not petty tabloid gossip or inside baseball. that they went undetected or were rewarded while great reporters were laid off? it’s a huge system failure

An annual reminder:

The cognitive & emotional toll of staying in contact with abusive family can be both significant & difficult to recognize.

There's a kind of social contract that abusive parents have violated. You owe them nothing. Nothing.

Thanksgiving doesn't change that.

Not having a cell phone/car cost me most employment opportunities, and that was at the lowest level of service-sector work. I used a decade-old PC, took public transit, and barely spent money on myself, but financial martyrdom STILL didn't earn me financial stability, much less help me get a job.
Also, I wonder if simply cutting expenses harms people by making them less familiar with new products and services. Feel like being familiar with what’s going on in the world is a competitive advantage and shoving people off that is a quite way to segment society.
yes, I feel like you can safely ignore anyone who tells you with a straight face in 2025 that you can just do without a smartphone

This article makes really good points about the inability of most people to cut expenses without entirely losing the ability to participate in the economy. I get tired of people telling me to live cheaper by eliminating things that are necessary for modern life.

In Canada this feels true too, there isn’t any getting ahead of just surviving without at least 100k for a family. That meant most people are in deep poverty, but we haven’t adjusted out reality to talk about that.
TL;DR: the *actual* poverty line in the US for a family of four with two young children is about $140,000, and there isn't much improvement in quality of life between $40K and $100K.

There's more good stuff in there too, you should read the whole thing.

One of many fine bits in the article: modeling costs on whether or not the item in question is a "Participation Ticket" rather than a luxury item. (It correctly identifies that smartphones are now these...)
This is an insightful but deeply upsetting article about why everyone in the US feels poor, and why the current political situation emerges as a direct result.
